I’m gen-x and trying to think of what was cool 5 years ago. 2021. So middle of the pandemic. I guess wearing funky masks, working from home, socially isolating? Aw shit, I miss those things too.

I must be off my game today. A headline started with “Sam Altman Says” and I accidentally read the whole headline.

How big asshole he is ? Guy thinks that he can say same things over and over and people won’t get sick of it. The product he sells is not work tool, it’s pop culture. The problem with pop culture is that it shifts to something else every 5-7 years.

So RIP AI because time is ticking. Their product if it have not attracted enough people to survive will vanish in the next 1-3 years. Deal with it.

Actually what young people want is the connection between their struggle and their achievement. It’s mentioned in Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers”.

So, that kind of products seems to not be very tall in that regard.

If you mean the book, then the moment when Dubois talks about Johnny’s sports award. If you mean AI bots, then the part where the user doesn’t do most of the work. That’s not necessarily a problem, say, while for bodybuilders doing physical work required to get somewhere is important, for house builders that’s not quite so and power tools are not considered something dishonest. But most things generative AI is being used for are where some form of art and culture could coexist with useful practical outcomes.

It’s like people who, during conversations on niche interests, use Google so fast that they seem erudites. Like with Turing test, that might be good enough for others, but if they themselves are not interested enough and just relay things they hear to Google, what’s the point?

I’m Gen X, but Gen Z right now is my fuckin’ hero. Every time I hear a story about young folks rejecting AI and taking critical thinking and creative writing classes, it casts a ray of hope.
