I like the idea of a compound or a village for a multi-generational family home. Seems like a nice blend of closeness and respecting boundaries. I’m not saying that wasn’t the case in your situation. I’m sure you had a method of respecting their privacy, too.
It really was an open door policy. Only time I had to knock was at night after 8 or so because they would lock up. I guess other family would call at nighttime, but daytime was open
