Well, this is defintely not good for the GrapheneOS project. they’ve already been criticized for being only accessible by techbros and people with sufficient resources to buy a Pixel. A lot of people were assuming a lower price from Motorola. This is crazy.

A lot of people were assuming a lower price from Motorola.

Those people have been fooling themselves. It has been clear for quite a while that the partnership would apply to “flagship” phones for now. That’s corporate code for: “phones that are unnecessarily expensive and chock-full with tech that most people don’t need, but buy anyway in order to (unsucessfully) impress others”.

I just bought a pixel 10a open box for like $350.

Like I get some people are stuck on Walmart specials, but how cheap does it need to be before its not considered a purchase for the privileged by you?

Well, its not just the money, its the fact that it is a Google product. Many of us, outside the USA don’t trust anything that Google produces, including Android itself (which is why degoogled phones are a thing) nor do we want to fuel the techno fascists running the company.

I’m outside the US. I brought several broken Pixels Pros & fixed them with Chinese parts. I run GrapheneOS on all of them. None of my money went to Google. I even sold one with GrapheneOS still installed & the buyer understood what that meant.

You don’t need to trust ungoogled phones, you just need to trust the forensic analysis, cyber security reports & new patches that point towards a cryptographically safe environment.

I hate Google as much as any of you Lemmies but there are ways. Plenty.

Ah y antes de que digan mamadas de privilegio y así… gano en axolopezones y estoy a la mitad entre bajos ingresos y pobreza 🫠

Grapheme runs tests on googles firmware regularly.

If it was actively doing something it shouldnt, they’d notice.

You could argue there could be something hidden in the firmware for use by the state when they REALLY REALLY REALLY want to get into something, and are willing to blow a good backdoor on it. But that’s also something you deal with on any modern PC, unless you wanna party like its 2011 and run an old FX-Series AMD chip, or a librebooted machine with ME Cleaner. (See Intel ME/AMD PSP)

The pixel is still a product of Google that Google benefits from when you purchase it. Some if us want to avoid contributing to their power as much as we can. Not purchasing a Pixel one of those choices.

Android needs to be replaced as well. I still hold hope for mobile Linux.

Google doesn’t own the PC market.

I usually buy a refurbished Pixel a generation or so behind the current. At least it doesn’t directly support Google. Not perfect, but it’s what I can afford.

I understand that logic. But it’s the very fact of even owning something that they produced is enough for me to reject it. if for nothing more than I don’t want people seeing that i use a pixel phone because then, I benefit Google by acting as free advertising for their devices. Is my view extreme? Maybe, but i really hate the tech oligarchs. They have ruined so much in this world.

Oh no I’m not saying I like the situation, I’m just saying its currently the only good option if you want something that works this instant.

I love the idea of desktop Linux in my pocket, I daily drove an OG Pine Phone for a year. After a year for daily driving a Cosmo communicator.

The support just isn’t there and I really really wish it was. I honestly think the federal government needs to step in and fund FLOSS development, but lmao good luck, they don’t even pay for cancer treatments.

Yeah same, they also choose to drop support for phones as soon as official support drops which is a bit dumb (most firmware are feature complete and don’t have security issue, on the other hand not delivering OS updates with security fixes is definitly dangerous).

I much prefer the philosophy of LineageOS: you don’t want to throw away your 10 years old phone? Just put the latest android version on it and go on!!
