Having played several systems I have no idea why anyone chooses d&d other than it seems like the default.
I’m in a d&d group and every time they’re flipping through the books I want to shake them and show them literally anything else. Even just vibe up your own system on the spot.
Im pretty sure that’s the reason why. My group started on d&d because it’s the default and so has a lot of resources available starting out for players and gms alike. We don’t do d&d anymore and migrated to other systems after ending the campaign.

I like Risus, its GM guide is 4 pages long and it’s played with plain ol’ d6’s

That’s cool, but also I feel I was a little judgy in my comment. If anyone just straight up enjoys d&d for what it is there’s nothing wrong with that.
