        It’s debated with no clear answer. Syphilis is one suggested reason. From what we know he was apparently just a sickly man in general, so it could have been a number of compounding things.

      Indeed, this picture is from the last year or so of his life when he was completely lost to mental illness. It looks goofy at first but is quite disturbing when you know the context behind it.
