FYI a gas heater can have a tank. I think you are referring to a “tankless” heater. They are nice, but expensive. I had one in my previous house.
Here they are ubiquitous, and yes I have seen commercials for ones with a tank inbuilt, which is just stupid IMO as you have instant hot water on demand.
It’s not stupid when you factor the cost. If you want do multiple things at once with hot water, you’ll need a bigger tankless. As it gets bigger and can heat more water at once, the price goes way up. Not everyone can afford that.
A tankless can also be electric.
