This sounds stupid but the most consistent reason I have heard as to why people dropped the show was Miller’s hat. It definitely has a slow and overwhelming start, but somehow the hat exacerbates that for people. I guess it’s not necessarily the type of thing people expect to see going into a science fiction epic so it throws them off a bit and they think the show is less serious/ambitious than it actually is. Even I found it quite weird at first (not knowing at the time that it was inspired by film noir and hardboiled tropes).
I initially stopped watching early on during ky first attempt becuase i thought it was some sort of space true crime shit with Miller as the noir cop. It quickly moves past that but it does definitely give the wrong impression about what the shows about.
Probably doesn’t make sense (pragmatically) to have a hat in a place without rain or sun. I think it’s even pointed out in the books/show itself, it’s more a personal thing than anything else. Some people might assume it’s sloppy world building.
But, Guardians of the galaxy had a cassette player in civilizations that could absolutely digitalize those songs and nobody had an issue. Also a personal choice by Star lord
It’s definitely not sloppy worldbuilding.
The character was born in the belt, but wants and pretends to be an Earther.
He even underwent surgery to look more like one. And the hat is part of it.
It would only make sense on earth, so by wearing it he signals that he’s from there.
(Not sure if that is touched upon in the series, but it’s explained in the books.)
What I don’t remember is, does he just wear it like on earth, or does he use something to fix it in place? Even close to the surface “gravity” is lower, closer to the center any small jump and it might not stay in place.
They have artificial gravity in the belt at most stations created by the spin though not nearly as much as Earth’s. Also Miller has never been to Earth.
Part of the problem is that the classic detective hat (trilby?) Miller wears is similar to the redditor m’lady meme hat. People found it hard to take his character seriously because of that (particularly since he is initially introduced as a typical tryhard “cool” character). The show markets itself as a science fiction epic (which it is, eventually) but those first few episodes have a lot of Miller walking around in the hat doing typical slow burn noir detective stuff and people think that’s the entire show and lose interest.

Keeps the rain off, though.

What’s with the hat? Out of the loop here. Only saw it once, don’t remember details.

But it kept the rain off of his head!
But if that’s their only reason for dropping it then they have other issues they need to deal with.
