There used to be a show on Discovery in the US called “It Takes A Thief”. The setup was that people would have them come and rob their house, while they watched from a remote truck with cameras in the house, then they’d get all of their stuff back and a free security upgrade.

It was pretty interesting. Relevant to this conversation, was that everyone who had a dog was sure the dog would protect the house. In reality, the dog NEVER helped. The thief would just bring food for the dog and trap the dog in a room with the food, and they’d be free to ransack the rest of the house.

Other interesting things - people would get really upset, even though they knew it was fake, they could stop it at any time, and they’d get their stuff back. The reality was just really hard. Once the robbed a frat house - while other people were still there - and one guy didn’t take it seriously until the thief broke some precious heirloom he had (they saved the real one and put a fake one on camera for the thief to break).

It was a great show. It didn’t run long, maybe two seasons, but it was really eye opening.
