It’s a moment that even surprised co-creator George R.R. Martin. “Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise,”… “Not to say that my characters don’t take shits, but I normally don’t write about them at any length. When I saw the rough cut, I wrote, ‘What is this? Where did this come from? I don’t know if we really need the shit.’

    Also George,

Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up, she was shitting brown water. The more she drank the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew.

Anyway the tone of the show is very different while still being firmly set in Westeros. I really enjoyed the first episode.

yeah i agree about the shit scene. I’m not opposed to poop jokes by any means, but this one didn’t land for me. I get the intent to set the vibe early and break from GoT (the cut away from the GoT theme song was a nice editing choice), but without setup it just felt abrupt instead of subversive. The “execution” of it was also a bit too cartoony compared to the rest of the episode.

Anyway, I also enjoyed the rest of the episode.

I liked it, but the moment I saw it (a minute into the show?) I knew some people wouldn’t care for it. Which is completely fair. It’s such a jarring moment. However it definitely sets the tone, even if the show doesn’t actually reflect the tone being set.

But I don’t fault anyone for not liking it. It’s a divisive choice.
