There’s a clip of a prolific voice actor (I wanna say Dan Castellaneta, or maybe Rob Paulsen) who says bad impressions make for the best character voices, because it gives the voice more character and familiarity without making people just think of the target of the impression.
I think it was Hank Azaria. Or at least I’ve seen some clip of him talking about how a lot of his characters start as “bad impressions” of famous people.

I like to pick characters from movies and shows to emulate. Store clerk might be ron swanson, or a town mayor might be deadpool. I played a demon as Kevin spacey once. That one creeped people out really good.
