  • Also have to take into account that the early 8-bit systems from Japan were often marketed towards children in the US. They would ramp up the difficulty of games - which were usually too expensive for kids to purchase on their own - to bring more longevity and perceived value. Games were viewed as expensive at a time where “Kill your television” was a common mantra, when parents wanted their kids playing outside as much as possible, and the consequences of Reagonomics was coming into full effect.

So Nintendo played it safe for a very long time (even more than they do now) and still got a lot of pushback and flack from conservative parents.

  • My SP is in pretty good shape. I’ve only had to replace the battery and got an Everdrive for it. However, I am wary of taking it outside of my house since it’s not exactly easily replaceable.

I picked up a Brick Hammer because it was close enough to the same experience with of course, a lot of improvements. But also because it wasn’t packed with unnecessary things like joysticks, etc. The buttons are almost perfect too, which i am super picky about. If this had been out around that time it would’ve been a tough decision.

vim is basically my foreverhome at this point. I feel clumsy trying to use most other things. But I also like emacs shortcuts and learned a bunch of them unwittingly via bash having that mode set out of the box.

  • This always baffled me. It really was so lazy and boring with the sets. It is weird when you think about how they had all those creative engineers making frickin’ killbots at their disposal. Let them eat… But no, just flat areas and stupid hammers and floor saws too slow and weak to do anything… so everyone makes indestructible wedges to push other bots up on the edge, or a spin-hammer that is undefeatable.
