As the comic says, it depends. I was going to do DE or MATE for my old hardware, but figured out Cinnamon would run fine. But I knew better than to try Ubuntu. I use it on my main PC that can handle it, but older stuff, no way, it’s got too much going on.
Ubuntu has long lost their way. They’re no longer the go-to.
Linux Mint is safer bet.

MATE and Cinnamon are desktop environments, they could be used on either distro.
LMDE uses Debian for upstream instead of Ubuntu. If you have regular Linux Mint, it uses Ubuntu upstream
