People who become right wing because they’re annoyed by leftists believe in nothing and are just looking for a tribe that makes them feel good.

“Shit up!” Sounds like something you’d say in a pep talk. Like before a big game or something. “OKAY GUYS, TIME TO SHIT UP!” “YEAH SHIT UP” “LETS SHIT UP!”

Thanks for making me laugh about myself. No better med than to have a little joke at yourself! Going to start using it in my local neighborhood tennis matches!

    Republicans love a conversion story.

“I was a leftist on the Road to Damascus when I got mugged by reality and now I think Donald Trump is a sexy himbo who will bring about a new American Golden Age. Please buy my merch and subscribe to my podcast.”

Virtually every high profile conservative has a “Why I Left The Left” tagline in their biography. Some of it, I think, goes back to the Nixon/Reagan Era when you really did have a bunch of FDR Dixiecrats selling out to corporate Republicans.

Reagan himself - something of the Joe Rogan of his era - would happily parrot whatever ideology was whispered in his ear. So he went from a Vulgar Marxist during his early Hollywood days, got that top-shelf Nancy head game while his wife wasn’t looking, and converted to MAGA Republicanism in the 1960s. Subsequent national Republicans just repeated this story to their base voters after swapping themselves into their Dear Leader’s role.

More bizarrely, college Trotskyite groups were an absolute hive of neoconservatism. Everyone from William F. Buckley to William Kristol to Richard Bruce Cheney came out of these nominally leftist groups, found religion in Big Business, and swore their souls to Mammon during their early 30s.

And you’ve got guys like Donald Trump who was a loyal Democrat and big party donor from his early days straight into 2007, when the party decided to nominate a black guy for President over his boo Hillary. Then, suddenly, he discovered he actually hated Democrats all along.

But a lot of it is just bullshit. Saying you were a dumb kid who was tricked into agreeing with Weather Underground by Fake News, until someone handed them a Bible with a copy of Atlas Shrugged stapled to it. And then THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING. It’s a classic hit of the Republican genre.

I remember in the 80s and early 90s it was very popular for preachers (especially youth ministers) to have a conversion story. Like they were out doing drugs or eating babies and Jesus came to them to call them.

Youth ministers were generally more hilarious. I wish I had a nickel for every time one of them talked about how they wrestled every day with homosexual thoughts and used to give handjobs to truckers in truck stop bathrooms or whatever (ok, that’s hyperbolic but I think it’s funny). “Everyone” struggles with those kinds of thoughts we just have to resist Satan.

Motherfucker what? Am I so righteous that god said I don’t need to be tempted or am I so evil that it wouldn’t matter, because I’ve never looked at a dude and thought “Yep, gonna split him in half”.

    Centrists being ignored again.

This polarization is the problem. It should be possible to talk about actual issues and possible solutions across political lines. Campism fucking sucks.

I know it’s hard to imagine to hardened ideologues like yourself, but some people think right and left have good solutions and blind spots for certain problems. They engage with topics and discourse, investigate the scientific evidence, are capable of nuance and compromise, are able to calm their emotions, etc.

That depends a lot on the country.

Increasing military capabilities is a good idea for ensuring peace in Europe.

Removing regulations that make building new housing expensive will lead to more construction, more supply, and lower rents. Price controls on rent have very limited effects and hinder new construction.

Trade and foreign investments is more effective in developing poor countries than foreign aid as charity spent on feel good programs.

Entrepreneurship rewards skilled creative and hard work. It’s a path towards freedom and success, that’s possible for more people.

            Meritocracy is desirable.

Terrible idea not based in reality, state/community built housing can achieve much better results without a profit motive or cutting corners resulting in worse living standards.

Once again not left or right.

Everything right wing I like is neither left nor right.

Across Europe it’s the left wing parties that are opposed to increased military spending. Many even want to leave NATO.

Leftists cry when aid money is no longer spent on queer theater plays in Bolivia.

                housing myth

Look up scientific studies on rent control. The effects are extremely limited and create bad incentives. Rent control is classic populism that ignores market forces.

Rent control always creates a whole market of illegal subletting. Renters with a cheap apartment will hold onto it and illegally sublet it at an inflated price. So you create a whole new group of mini landlords without affecting rent. There’s also bribes paid to get a rent controlled apartment and similar shenanigans. Those lucky enough to qualify will hold on to their apartment, even if it’s too big for them. Classic examples are elderly after their children have moved out and their spouse has died. That makes the market inefficient and doesn’t allocate according to need. You end up with young families squeezing into tiny places while one old person has excessive space.

Housing built by the state can help. It increases supply after all. However the state has to pay the same costs for construction and upkeep as private investment. That means state run housing has to set rents at a level that covers the construction costs, mortgage interest, upkeep, administration, etc.

I support building housing by state owned companies and privileges for housing unions and coops.

High construction costs are often caused by complex regulations or bad zoning. Construction costs in Germany have skyrocketed over the past 30 years, mainly because of escalating regulations. That results in houses being over-engineered and having to provide lots of certifications and such.

                meritocracy

Demanding quotas for supposedly oppressed groups is a leftwing past time. If you go all the way left, there are lots of people who demand the same salary independently of profession or productivity.

Equality of outcome is a common leftist demand.

I dream about being in a world where I was not that leftist anymore because so many people would be that more leftist than me, that I would be kind of conservative for them. But the world should be the one that changes. I’m not gonna. At a point I thought we were going into that direction.
