Those hand signals are also used in cars and are part of pretty much every driver’s handbook that you have to read to get your license, though???

Ah, but hand signals are the equivalent of indicators/blinkers, and the part of the brain responsible for remembering to use them self-destructs as soon as your license arrives in the mail.
Yeah you’re supposed to use them in case your turn signal is broken. Other drivers are supposed to know what they mean.

I just go with generic gestures/pointing as needed. I know what you folks are like and it would be silly to think that everyone knows them.
all i’ve ever used is throwing out the hand in the direction i’m turning, i don’t really see much need for anything else and no one can fail to understand what “arm pointing dead left” means.
