Due to reduced demand, we at insert asshole corpo trash here have decided to exit the consumer market and focus on our cloud game streaming service and a continued effort in the AI space.

Yep this is me. I’ll make do. It’s gonna suck for them but I got more important priorities right now like making sure I can afford food and not go into debt. All these companies can fuckin pound sand.

Not to mention the AAA games landscape kinda sucks now. You need loooong development time and the customers need reasonably expensive PC components to run the newest games. Those games keep getting more expensive while launching in bad shape (in many instances this is fixed on the launch day or shortly after, but not always).

Meanwhile Steam data shows that the vast majority of players (~70%, IIRC) spend most of their time playing games a decade old or more. You don’t need an expensive computer to do that, and those games are often free or available on steep discount.

My PC is about 6 years old and still works great. I love my PC and have no complaints. Problem is, my daughter and wife like playing games with me and my second PC is like 15+ years old. That thing is useless and can barely play Minecraft. I want to upgrade so they can use my current rig but prices are just not worth it right now.

Got my Steam Deck and old-ish gaming pc. I can last a decade easy. Last thing I bought was another 8TB HHD for my NAS so they can forget about me paying for media too.

I’ve still been mostly happy with my 3080 / 5800X and was going to hold off on any upgrades until a more complete rebuild, but seeing the writing on the wall I decided to pick up a 9070XT while prices are lower just to make sure I can really stretch out this platform as much as possible.

Statistically speaking, RAM is the most likely part to fail and I’d rather be in the market for DDR4 than DDR5 if that happens.

I have a 3070 but same. I was mildly tempted to pick up a 9070xt as well but decided against it.

I can imagine at least a few people are in a similar boat to me. I intended to upgrade this year and had even saved up for it - but the insane price hikes have completely killed any justification I could muster, so now I’m just waiting until something breaks.

Evers single game in backlog is perfectly playable on my current Setup.

I believe it’ll take a few dozen years to finish my backlog.

I don’t need to upgrade or build a new one in those years.

Yup. I’ve been wanting to upgrade my CPU, but any sensible upgrade would also require me to get ddr5 RAM, which is a no go

I upgraded last spring, mainly because I was worried about prices going up due to tariffs:

    • 1700X → 5700X3D
    • 32GB DDR4 →64GB DDR4
    • 512GB NVME → 4TB NVME
    • Vega 56 →9070XT
    • New case and PSU*

Turned out the tariffs weren’t as bad as I expected but the AI buying spree I didn’t anticipate was even worse (and expected to last for a long time), so now I slightly regret not going all the way for DDR5. Would’ve been an extra $500+ back then, but would be an extra $1000+(?) now. Still, I’m much more future-proof than I would’ve been had I not been paying attention to politics, as my old setup wasn’t actually feeling inadequate yet at the time.

I also almost built a solid-state NAS with one of those cube-shaped Beelink mini PCs, but missed my chance: the SSD prices started spiking while I was waffling over it in my online shopping cart. Even the mini PC itself costs nearly double now what it did then, let alone the storage for it.

(* New case because I got the wrong 9070XT under launch-day time pressure and the 2.5-slot card didn’t fit in my 2-slot ITX case, and then new PSU because the new case required SFX instead of ATX. I could’ve gotten a bigger case for less money, but I wanted more portability in case I need to flee the country on short notice to escape fascists. And yes, that was my actual thought process. Thanks, Trump. 😡)

I was planning on finally making the leap into 10 year old tech last year, but even that is impossibly high. I’ll stick with my DDR3 ram and my rx580.
