Hundreds of residents packed La Pine City Hall Wednesday night as opposition grows to a proposed 20-megawatt data center. Community members raised concerns about water, power costs, transparency and whether voters should have a direct say in the project.
To go along with that first quote, these data centers are owned by LLCs spun up just to remove liability from the real companies that own them, so even if La Pine or any other small city could win a legal battle against them, they’d just fold up the LLC, send all the equity and profit to the parent company, and leave the city holding the bag.
