He died in Transformers The Movie. One of the dumbest moves in any franchise history. Toy sales tanked. Viewership tanked. So they walked it back but the damage was done.
EDIT: The amount of childhood trauma inflicted upon gen-x by “children’s media” is actually pretty surprising.
For context, though, they were trying to sell new toys and give an in-universe explanation. It wasn’t thoughtless, just severely miscalculated.
Except one of those new toys they were trying to sell was just Optimus Prime with a new paint job and a new trailer. They made him a different character (Ultra Magnus) instead.
That was one. He, uh, rather made a habit out of it going forward after that.

Alternative view: this is the best Transformers movie to date. I still have it on Jellyfin and watch it once in a while. Spent my whole childhood watching this tape over and over. I would still recommend it today.
I haven’t gone back to watch the TV show, but I remember the TV show being much after the movie. Early Transformers show seasons were very basic and over time the stories got more mature and improved.

First 2 seasons were before the movie, 3 and 4 were after.
This movie is one of my first core memories. I distinctly remember standing on the movie theater seats cheering with my brother when they played the “The Touch” and my mom smacking us and telling us to sit down.
I also remember Optimus Prime cussing in that movie (“damn”?) and being shocked - but now I can’t find it when searching. So maybe I made that part up?
It happened when Ultra Magnus was trying to open the Matrix.
