People making these decisions have not worked a day in their life, especially someone like Merz.

Merz and the greens have made Germany worse with each stupid decision and it will take years to fix all the damage they have done.

That happened in one of my old companies. Doctors note for everything. So instead of one day off sick, people would ask for doctors note for 5-10 days off.

    The policy quickly changed back.

How would this even work? You wake up with what is essentially a 24-48-hour bug. Normally, you would rest and come back in a day or so, but now everyone needs to be seen by a doctor. I don’t think doctors are going to have the capacity to respond to such an influx of paperwork.

Some places do it here in Finland. It works exactly as poorly as you imagine. People show up to work sick more often and spread their cold to everyone in the office, and doctors are bogged down having to write sick notes for 1-2 day absences.

Of course we also have a stupid parallel private employment healthcare system so these are doctors whose job description is pretty much doing nothing but this, so it doesn’t (usually) directly lead to congestion in public healthcare – but it does indirectly do that, because these are doctors who could be working as GPs or something else useful instead of what they’re actually doing.

Hey Germany, stop adopting the worst aspects of US culture, thanks. We can tell you right the fuck now all this does is make everyone go to work sick and spread disease.

      Er, wut?

I have never once needed a doctors note to call in sick, in the 20+ companies I’ve worked for in 12 states.

Every one would rather you didn’t come in and make other people sick.

I guess you’ve never worked retail/warehouse/restaurants or other low-end jobs. You’re often threatened with your job if you take off work for being ill in those positions.

That’s indeed bad, but wait until you hear about the sick leave rules in other regions outside Europe and democratic allies, particularly in those that celebrate themselves as ‘socialist’ or ‘communist’.

Oh no I’ve heard of China’s 9-9-6 and such, but it’s definitely American political and social influence that is helping push Europe right.

I would namecheck China if I thought China was the one influencing them like this, but the American cultural and legal influence on Europe is plain to see.

Like examples such as when Sweden was influenced by US media companies to put the guys from The Pirate Bay in jail prison, but those same companies are more or less okay with making “deals” with AI companies despite the AI companies having done what The Pirate Bay admins did but by ten-thousand-fold if not more.

Anyway, yes, the rest of the world often has even worse options, but Europe (in general) has pretty good social and worker protections, and it’s not China exerting it’s influence to reduce worker protections in Europe. China seems happy just kicking back and letting the West make all the mistakes.

        EDIT: typos, clarification

Are they just doing this as a red herring to get people worked up and ignorant of some other heinous BS they’re trying to pull? Doesn’t make a lick of sense.

So productivity will go down because people who can’t get a doctor’s note in time will come in sick and infect their colleagues. It’s a false economy.

On top of that, doctors will be under increased strain from having to write out the sick notes

I like what our province has done (BC, Canada)

      https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2025LBR0041-001106

Under the new employment standards regulations, employers cannot ask for a sick note for a worker’s first two health-related, short-term absences of five consecutive days or fewer in a calendar year.

“When you’re sick with the flu, or your child comes down with a cold, the last thing you should have to do is go to your doctor or a medical clinic to get a piece of paper saying you’re sick,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour. “Unnecessary medical appointments take time away from patients who need to see their doctors and nurses, don’t help people get better any faster and risk further spread of illness.”

These changes are based on input from health-care providers, who pointed to scientific evidence that shows most minor illnesses for adults, such as a cold and influenza, have symptoms that typically resolve within five days.

Some universities are also switching the format of in person assessments to account for this. For example, adding an extra few quizzes and taking the best X out of Y quizzes so that students can miss a certain number of them with no documentation

Raising the retirement age and adding administrative burden to sick days, but hey some of you will temporarily get $700 per year to help raise kids. Somehow doesn’t feel like a good trade.

Sounds like the german healthcare system is about to have a lot of work on their hands, and german workplaces having a lot more sick people showing up for work.

Sorry you had to plan ahead that you were going to wake up sick this morning. Come to work for the day and try again tomorrow.

I bet the healthcare system will be thrilled to see that influx of patients who need a doctor’s note as well.

This kind of thing about the shit out of doctors. “Oh you need a note for a cold? Have the entire week off.”
