Rn I’m using Metro, app has a bit of bugs, music stops randomly even after setting battery optimization to unrestricted and hasn’t been updated since April 2023. What do y’all suggest?
+1 for Auxio. Been using it nearly a year now, no issues.
I’ve been using Auxio since a few months I finally moved on from Vanilla Music https://github.com/OxygenCobalt/Auxio
Auxio is awesome
Thx!
Can confirm! Ive been using it for a couple of months now and it seems quite stable.
+1 for Auxio! 💙
VLC is the goat here, no?
I might have a very odd bug, but VLC only plays one song normally and then any song after that is complete silence. No updates or reinstalls could fix it.
YMMV perhaps?vlc works pretty well, but for some reason it cuts off the first 1-2s of any first song i play
Sure it’s not just the bluetooth phones, or your amp / speakers waking up from power save?
ahh that seems like the culprit, thanks. just weird that it doesnt happen with antenna pod or newpipe/ tubular for example
I switched back to VLC a while ago after trying others. Not fancy, but it tends to just work.
After using Metro and Vanilla for ages, I switched to Gramophone. Looks pretty and I find it intuitive. Also has great support for media change detection and does m3u playlists (that I rely on heavily) very well.
Metro is a discontinued fork of Retro Music Player, which was updated only a few months ago.
Finamp, very polished, actively developed and cross Platform. Requires a jellyfin instance. But thats a nice diy project in it self, can only recommend
I am using Symphony it’s licensed under gplv3 and plays every audio format I throw at it. Also it has a basic, but beautiful ui. It also has a feature to make playlists
Phonograph Plus is a nice music player app. I’ve been using it for many years now. GPLv3.
I use Ultrasonic with my Navidrome server and it’s fine, but I really wish I could find a player that would replicate the old itunes style Genre -> Artist -> Album selection flow. The Genre tab in most players just gives you a list of songs, which is not helpful for large libraries.
If you have a subsonic/navidrome server I can not recommend Tempo highly enough!
Keeping an eye on this thread. I’ve tried many FOSS music apps, but never found one as nice as the non-FOSS Pulsar, particularly in regards to playlist functionality.
I like this https://github.com/CappielloAntonio/tempo
Do you need a simple player, or do you also need it to connect to a local network?
You should be able to find a ton of active, simple players.
But good luck if you need network support. I couldn’t find any that worked well, featured caching, and were actively maintained. I bit the bullet and purchased Symfonium, and have been happy with that.
Simple player
Man, now that I look, there really are very few that are still in active delopment.
Before Symfonium, I was using FX (also paid) for years, but hated how it didn’t read and cache files from my NAS, so I’d have to use another app to keep my very large library synced with my phone.
I hope you find something that works for you. It’s a shame that we don’t have more options here. I wonder if it’s because more people are moving to streaming platforms, and fewer of us use local/offline collections.
I found Auxio and it’s great so far
