I’m using a shield tv pro and it acts like this on my gaming PC too always freezing and making me force shut it down.

I have Stremio on a iPhone that I don’t use. I just AirPlay it to the TV.
It’s notoriously bad through TV if you’re running through there. I have VLC installed on TV and through the stremio settings, playback, default player - set to external. Since using VLC I have had so many less issues. I haven’t had any issues on device, but I don’t use it much there. Having said that, once I also had to refresh my API key and cleared the cache for good measure and that also helped.

Jellyfin doesn’t require “hours of learning”. It takes minutes to setup, you can literally just copy/paste commands if you use Linux and if you use Windows then you just run a .exe file.
So I can have that hooked up to the open net through my NAS at home with zero security issues of accessing it through other devices?
Does this not leave my internet exposed in a dangerous way?
Or, do I have to learn about firewalls and limited access and the ability to inspect the traffic going through? And how to set up tailscale and only have one port open, etc. Etc.

Get a free netbird acct. it’s also real easy to setup. Just connect your client and server devices and then point your Jellyfin client to your server’s netbird (vpn) ip.
You could use plex instead, that takes care of all the remote access and security stuff, but for a fee.
I bought a little box computer (and some drives), followed a guide for linux and docker. It has a VPN setup on there too…that’s all i have. Not sure if your nas is drive or drive and computing, but NAS is the expensive part covered. I dont think i have any security…im thinking now i should.

The official way to get movies and TV series for self hosting is to purchase them on physical disc, then rip that media to your computer so you don’t need to swap out discs anymore.
There are also tools to rip the movies from streaming sites. Depending on how you want to do it, there’s various tools to download the content, but it’s a bit of a war between the streamers and the end users.
There’s also ways to download that content from people who share it online. Depending on where you live, this might be completely legal, it might get you fined, it might get your internet shut off, or it might get you put in jail. The worst most people get is a letter telling them to knock it off, but you should look into the laws where you live to find out for sure.

You don’t have to have a second PC, although that is the most common method. My Raspberry Pi 4 is not powerful enough for the quality I watch at so I use it as a Navidrome server for music and have Jellyfin running on my main PC instead. Ideally, I would have another mini PC for Jellyfin but my setup still works fine currently. It’s just a bit clumsier and uses more power.

That’s pretty much what self hosting is. You can get more complex if you really want to, but it’s traditionally where old household computers go to live out their autumn years.

Jellyfin is a self hosted media manager and relies on you having the files…if you dont have the files downloaded/stored its gonna give you nothing to display.
I set aside a day last year and set up a self host, once up and running its actually quite low maintenance. I use it for stuff i watch regular or that I want to keep (viewed and managed by JF). Also my shows because it just picks up new episodes in the background. Convenient.
For casual streaming when i dont know what i want to watch/check out a new show…its stremio.
You can do the same kind of live streaming with Jellyfin/Plex using Decypharr. It’s more complicated to set up, though.

I do not have the time or the desire to learn how to have it accessible safely from other devices.

You don’t expose your NAS, you expose a web server to serve Jellyfin content. Ideally you front it with a reverse proxy.

Stremio is install, stream. No hosting of own content (and as this thread points out OP probably dosnt have any), no proxy, no downloading and setting up a seperate arr stack.
Put it this way, my 14yr old cousin has Stremio its that simple. While they could install Jellyfin I doubt they could setup and run all the other requirements to obtain and watch media as easily.

Its not that I don’t have the desire to learn its that I work 2 jobs and have children and don’t want to spend the few hours I do have free a day (which I take away from sleep to have) to be pulling my hair out learning about networking.
It sucks I know because I know it would probably be the superior option and I DO like seeding what I watch and stuff like that its just been easier to use torbox with stremio and have it work.
I feel like I don’t have the time to learn about reverse proxies and stuff like that.

I gave up on stremio a few weeks ago.
First the torrent search plugin I had been using only showed a very few releases. Then after changing to another search plugin my debrid provider was telling me almost everything had been DMCA’d, then when trying to find a new debrid provider several of the larger ones couldn’t take my payment.
IDK if something changed, or if these frustrations have been creeping in and I only just encountered all of them at once.
I started using stremio because it was the quickest and easiest “search to watch” for someone who doesn’t care to keep the content lying around. As that no longer seems to be the case I’m just downloading torrents from 1337x again.
RealDebrid did start flagging for DMCA. There’s supposedly some work around, but it’s made me need to find a new debrid service.
Nuvio - it uses the same stremio addons, you can import your settings. Nuvio can do more too.
But when Stremio shits the bed, have you checked that all of your addons are up to date, have you disabled any of the default addons (e.g. cinebye)? Have you tried to login to your stremio profile on a different platform or another version of Android to see if has the same issues?

I fricking love Nuvio on my Android but I couldn’t believe how featureless the windows version was, atleast when I last used it.
The Android version had so many features and adjustments and it even felt faster than Android Stremio.
Normal stremio was bugging on my PC as well, basically it crashed after like 30 seconds. I started using Stremio Enhanced. It seems fine now. It also has themes and plugins, but i didn’t mess with that.
You can start running jellyfin in like five minutes. After that you can devote as much or as little time as you want

As far as I know, jellyfin only streams local content, so for movies and TV you probably want the *arr family to find and download all the things.

Jellyfin is a great project. I use it myself. However, it’s not a stremio replacement.
Yeah now it’s as easy as copying a docker-compose file from the website and running
docker-compose up -d. Easier even than Plex, imo.You don’t even need Docker. There’s a plain binary for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

You don’t need to leave it on all the time. The server only needs to be running when you want to watch something.
There’s also the security issue of having a NAS open on the public net.
So it requires me learning all about how my firewall works and about inspecting all the internet traffic going in to it and learning all about ports and what not.
