when did BIOS flashing from the OS level become normal?
The OS will stage it, and the update will actually happen on reboot.
If you’re using a Linux system, you probably have
fwupdinstalled, which can pull down BIOS updates for various attached devices, including motherboard BIOSes. I’m sure that Windows has some analog.OK but was programming interface of BIOS always connected to the system? I thought you needed a programmer to flash it.
Yes that’s standard, as far as I know every x86 PC updates the BIOS this way.
Even in DOS days you could flash it from the running system. It was so common that for a while flashing a vendor’s BIOS update entailed booting from a DOS bootdisk.
