    Wonder what kind of water consumption rate to expect

    This is rainwater recycled!

      Sure, but you can only store so much rainwater and I haven’t seen rain in almost 2 months. In England! My plants would like some of the rainwater I have stored too and its very limited.

        The water drips down into the containment area where it’s pumped back up so I believe it is quite cyclical and efficient.

          Evaporative cooling means water is evaporating. With such a large area, potentially a fair bit of it.

            There is a relevant comment here that has great answer to that

            TLDR: You are more likely to waste more water going to the toilet than having a passive evaporative cooling wall

              I did see that, is that the same values this entire wall would use though? Looks like the actual numbers come from a single misting nozzle. When you get to the bit below…

              On another study, “Experimental study of cooling effects of a passive evaporative cooling wall constructed of porous ceramics with high water soaking-up ability” DOI, shows an evaporation rate of 20.7 kg/day for an area of 1.1m², converting to l/h/m², it is around 0.784 l/h, where it had max-min air temperatures at 36.4 and 26.2 °C, relative humidity (RH) at 72% and mean wind speed at 0.6 m/s

              That wall is way more than 1.1m² and 72% RH is pretty high. Of course a lot of water evaporating means its providing quite a bit of cooling which is nice. Going by the wet bulb temperature, at 72% RH you are getting up to about 5°c of cooling, that certainly sounds like it would be noticeable, of course it would be pushing humidity even higher in the area too.

              As a cool water feature, looks great. Even better with some more plants growing on it or the ones there will get bigger in time so that the wall is mostly green. If you want to run it fully off rainwater, hope you have a fairly big reservoir.

              Or you can go for the increasingly common attitude I see around the UK these days - why should I bother reducing my water usage at all when the water company lost more than me in leaks and dumps sewage in the sea. Totally get the anger to water companies, but wasting water doesn’t seem like the solution to that.
