It depends on your industry. Sometimes they will just heap additional work on you and get on your case for not completing it all on time. Sometimes they call on your day off and ask you to come in. Sometimes they go around asking people to stay late every day, and others they just tell you you’re not a “team player” if you leave on time.
Mostly it depends on how much they feel the need to hide what they’re doing.

working a few hours over (couple times a week, for a couple months on and off) got me nothing from the company, no mention in annual review, and it made my home life worse. they can keep all the extra hours, it wont be me.

I mean, it’s a request at that point not a requirement with any consequences. I think that’s a lot more reasonable of a way to cover things like call outs than some of the alternatives.
