Don’t most GUI’s follow the same ancient desktop paradigms? Nevermind W98, they were there in Windows 1.x and in UNIX window systems like W before 1985, and I even remember DOS TUI’s in products made by Borland as early as 1983 that basically worked the same.
Gnome is trying to do their whole “Macintosh with a concussion” thing, there’s a handful of tiling window managers that are difficult to describe, but…kinda yeah. Most of us also use QWERTY keyboards that date to the 19th century.
I’m not criticizing the paradigm, it works because it’s good.
I just meant it would be easier to say “watch out for Gnome on Ubuntu” than to list all the distro/DE combinations that follow the paradigm out of the box.
Give me at least windows 98 levels or I’m not touching linux

Linux has a wide selection of GUIs. For those comfortable with Windows I would recommend either Mint’s Cinnamon or KDE.

Okay, so what do you want instead? X-rays that beam the computer’s input and output directly into your brain?

A clone of MS DOS Shell and maybe Win 3.1 is all anyone really needs.
