I deleted my account and was in read-only mode for since they switched from old design. Now encountered this for first time. Time to abandon my habits
That’s the symptom of enshittification I hate the most: killing access for users without account
They really really really really, really, really really want your data.
shit. only usefull reddit feature become useless for me I used this to see nsfw posts or “unreviewed content” to see what is it
Not sure what the issue is, but I LITERALLY cannot even connect to the site without a redirect error. Anyone else experiencing this or not?
They will do anything to make people not use much better forum like lemmy.
My favourite loginless reddit browser, stealth, just stopped working too. No more gooning, I guess.
I love it. I think this is awesome. My mind has has a track record of being sinful and weak of will, but now I can’t accidentally browse that site anymore.
Yup. Reddit is doing everything they can to say “Stop using our site! We don’t want you here!” I remember how good the site used to be… it’s a shame that it has become so terrible; but as you suggest, now it takes no willpower at all to break the bad habit, so that’s nice.
that was thier plan when the purge users last year, now that they are running out of data to scrape fro AI purposes, they are trying to force lurkers to login now so they can mine more data now. i dont see them backtracking on any of the aggressive ai moderation, filters, and they lost alot of users with multiple accounts when they indiscriminately banne people. i heard people mostly lurk there now, because they were burned by reddit banning thier account, they dint want to risk getting banned so they lurk instead.
Lemmy is like Reddit was when it was great
Until you find a reliable redlib instance.
Yes!
Came here due to that. Today I got hit by “verify your age”, they want me to submit a selfie or an ID card. Hell no.
Out of curiosity, are you in a region that requires age verification for porn/social media? No need to be specific about which one, I’m just curious if they are limiting these checks to where it’s required by law or if they are pushing it out more broadly. This “requirement” from social media sites is one that the data mining ones are all too happy to have forced down on them.
Yes, Brazil.
I’ve seen those age verification checks been thrown around over the last couple of months - BUT -most of them are going that self verification route like Steam does: “if you are not a minor you can’t access this, but please go ahead and put a MM//DD//YY that shows us your are not a minor. Ok we believe you, you are all set, enjoy”.
Oh fuck that….
tell me about it… and the biggest problem is, like it or not, Reddit was my first choice for troubleshooting anything in my life.
So I have to get access again, I heard that by using VPN you can kinda bypass this age verification thing but, guess what, more information about this is on… Reddit! lol
I’ll see if I can do it after my work day has ended
still get this on proton vpn
For some weird reason, now I regained access to my Reddit account without doing a single thing. go figure
oh wait i thought u meant the old reddit login, idk how i misread that
I wonder what they are protecting against. AI scrapers most likely already have Reddit accounts.
OP don’t read this. You’ve escaped. Stay escaped.
Spoiler
Pretty sure it’s a regional block. When my VPN is in US I can’t access. Change countries and It’s still accessible. For me, at least.
I wasn’t seeing it when people started complaining about it, but I do see it now in Canada.
Aw, but it’s ‘to keep Reddit safe’, y’all!
Don’t worry, Lemmy is 90% things lifted straight off of Reddit, including the community names. Sure, only maybe 10% of the content makes its way over here, but to make up for it the mods here are far less sane and rational.
I have nothing but respect for the domain admins, because these individual despot mods are such tedious fucking losers, it’s unfathomable that these federated sites still manage to function and draw continuous traffic.
I love all the times mod logs show someone being banned from 37 communities back to back over 2 hours after not having even posted to any of them. It’s crazy anyone has that much time on their hands they decide it’s worth spending 2 hours making sure a random person who never interacted with any of their specific instances can in the future.
Good riddance. The tech focus was watered down over a decade ago (inb4 “but my niche sub about 1382 medieval Ottoman mace makers”). The subs to talk about social and personal life stuff are trolled so hard. Most casual users are completely oblivious to the scum and villainy of bad actors. Save for a few I’ve seen with mods that have a brain. Even then they’re powerless to do all but make sure users know.
It was already on the decline by 2016, but it never recovered from the_donald. Then they brought in a whole new user base with the redesign and push to mobile. All of those users assumed that deranged manic atmosphere was the norm. Maybe that’s how other big social platform are? I don’t know. Maybe they like that stuff. Some of them seem to. Crazy.
Oh yeah, and one of my sports team subs has dug in a network effect even though the mods have been using it for personal gain since about 2010. I hated that place and I’m glad to have been rid of it over the past few years.
the decline started when politics/propaganda started to become more intrusive, which is the time around P45 administration.
The Donald showed bad actors around the world how easy it was to rile people up and push narratives across the platform. It should have been nuked sooner.
I hope that someday we see the significant drop in traffic from this move, and hopefully the demise of spez and reddit.
Welcome! Made tbe transition for the same reason. I had an account, but deleted it as well. I’ve seen screen shots of people saying they are starting to require photo ID in order to access some parts as well, but can’t confirm the legitimacy.
I liked the new UI version more than the old one. Having to click into things and back out again was pretty annoying. I’m finding blorp.lemmy.zip to be amazing, especially with the “hide read posts from feeds” turned on. Its different enough while still providing a very familiar feel.
It depends on where they are. Some countries and states are requiring them to perform to access either NSFW subreddits or the site as a whole.
