Im so tired of Epic Games crying about Steam. If they had focused on, I dunno, making a better platform that people want to use instead of trying to bring Steam down to their level we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Instead EGS focused on the new industry standard of shitting on consumers and trying to force everyone around them to also shit on consumers in the hopes that EGS will be the lesser of 2 evils and people will pick them. That is why they continuously fail.
They burned a ton of goodwill really fast by paying for exclusivity. I don’t want to support that in any way.
Maybe it was for the best though, I gave in for 2 games and bought them through EGS, only to find out that they suck ass and that epic has a terrible and inconsistent return policy.
Epic has a launcher, Steam has a Workshop. But in this modern era mods aren’t well seen by corporates, so I also don’t see how can anyone do better than steam
Chances of me buying from them died years ago when they paid to pull Metro Exodus from being released on Steam.

Same here. Really pissed me off, especially because I was relying on Steam to notify me when it was released so I missed it by two weeks.
It is actually effortless to recover and compete. Make their launcher not ass. Most PC gamers have an epic account for the free games but never touch it because the launcher is so fucking awful.
Probably never going to happen without competent management though.

Mostly, I think it has a PR and direction problem. It works alright, its not crap software, the more money to devs angle is fantastic, but no ones going to use it when its figurehead reminds everyone he’s a big jerk via Tweet every week, or sends its development in precisely the wrong direction.
If I was in charge of EGS, I’d buy GoG, merge under the GoG brand, merge the storefronts, keep the GoG UI for branding but port EGS features over to the buggy Galaxy client.
Keep the GoG DRM free installer option. Keep the reasonable store fee. Dump the toxic EGS brand.
THAT would be a competitor to Steam, and theyd actually have the ethical high ground.

Unpopular opinion but as a consumer I only care about what I pay. Company takes a 30% or 5% cut… but I still pay 70 new either way. If Epic wanted to really compete with Steam they’d have feature parity and be cheaper, and while they’re closing in on the former, they’ll never be able to do the latter.
30% should be passed onto you as a higher price.

I can only repeat myself. They think DRM is their moneymaker. You are right they should, but that is you as a sane customer talking.
And make an effort towards l8nux compatibility. Steams market dominance is strengthened via its proton layer and OS agnostic launcher. GoG Galaxy is windows only, and even titles with a linux build can’t be run unless you use a windows compatibility layer for Galaxy.
Yes, I know it’s possible, but that requires more hacking than what the average person is willing to go through when they can just install steam instead.
EGS is already getting linux compatibility.
In my scenario, maybe EGS launcher with a GoG coat of paint would be better? Honestly I like a more minimal launcher anyway.

Nothing else needs to be done. You don’t need to make your games unplayable from other vendors, you don’t need to add specific rewards for using your storefront. All people want to do, is buy their games, and have a right to play them.
Hence the meme where every digital storefront is shooting themselves in the face while steam looks on with concern.
It seems like they’d try to be better than Steam to beat them at their own game. Weirdly, they keep making their stores worse. Steam points the way, and they keep running in the opposite direction.
