Did people like the original movie that much? I thought it was a rather weak Tarantino movie

I think it’s more that people really liked the character.

I’m with you on this one, the hollywood movie was entertaining but not nearly as good as past Tarantino films.
It wasn’t my favourite of his films, but it was still good overall. His other stuff is just even better. The ending was very entertaining though, I actually laughed out loud at that, quite a bit in fact. I don’t laugh out loud at movies very much.
The movie was fine, where other Tarantino movies were great. But Pitt’s character was great and one of the best things about the movie.
I’d be more inclined to like the character if they’d left out the part where he murdered his wife because she got on his nerves
He did? I don’t remember that at all. Might have to watch it again.
It’s the major reason Kurt Russell’s wife doesn’t want him working on the film (where he ends up fighting Bruce Lee), though there are others. But I didn’t see it in the theater, so I’m not sure what I saw was only extended edition stuff. But the version I saw, somebody talks about rumors that he killed his wife, and that her death wasn’t really an accident. etc.; then a bit later there’s a flashback to him on a boat with his wife, and they’re both drunk, and she’s verbally tearing him apart. He’s sitting in a lounge chair with a beer in his hand, and she just won’t shut up. Then he looks at a speargun off to his side.
Then they cut away with the implication that whatever happened to her, she earned it.
