Who’s your top, or top few, that even if you haven’t heard anything other than this person is in, or made this movie, (or show) who do you feel hits the right notes, enough to justify you know it’s worth giving it a shot, without knowing anything else, and why are they great?
I see a lot of people saying, this director is awful, and consensus, but I had no idea they were awful! But rather than ask for worst, who’s great, and what do you love about what they do?
Sam Rockwell
He chooses quite a variety of rolls and has that kind of sarcastic/relatable comedy about him that makes you want to watch.

Alex Garland is always worth a look. Dredd , the 28 days movies, Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare, Annihilation.
Anything by Robert Eggers. I just love the vibe of his movies.
Park Chan-wook. I’ve enjoyed every film I’ve seen from him, over quite a large filmography. His films always have well developed arcs with great endings, whether they are darkly comic tragedies or revenge thrillers. His style of direction is always creative and playful too, lots of interesting zoom shots and angles.
Some guys that I’ll also watch blind, but expect less from are Na Hong-jin, Woo Min-ho and Bong Joon Ho. Na has been consistent over a limited filmography, whilst Woo and Bong have larger filmographies with some of my favourites but also miss the mark from time to time.
I wasn’t really thinking about animations before another comment here, but of course I will always watch a Hayao Miyazaki film.
Martin McDonagh. In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missourri, Banshees of Inisherin.
Absolute cinema god.I watched seven psychopaths, and banshees of inisherin, and though I’d classify both movies as “good” I just didn’t get either at all. The banshees movie, what was the point? What was it trying to say? What was it about? No idea

I have seen damn near everything he’s made and pretty much all of it deserves sequels and followups. Unfortunately, he isn’t interested in that 😩
I especially liked his little comedy skits about God. “Aw look how happy they are just because I gave them rain… Kill them all.”
Makoto Shinkai. Even though the last one wasn’t good and the one before that was mid at best. He still made the best film I’ve seen. (君の名は。 (your name.)) so I’ll go see his movies when they come out.
Great shout, I’ve never seen a bad film from him. Always very moving and beautiful.

Interesting, which films are you basing the Bong nomination off then? These days when I hear his name it’s usually from someone who started with Parasite and has maybe seen his English language films like Snowpiercer and Mickey 17.
