This is Alyssa Resenzweig. She reverse-engineered Apple's M1 GPU with no public documentation and also developed an open-source Linux driver.

She also did this while she was still a full time undergraduate university student. Normally you’d expect someone with more experience to be doing this kind of low level hardware hacking, but she did all this while still young, before even graduating from university.

Please do this with the Nvidia chips too! Running Linux on this old Macbook pro is great but I can’t turn the brightness down with the generic driver.

Part of why it happened for Apple’s chips is that there weren’t any Linux-compatible GPU drivers. It’s easier to justify investing lots of time and effort into something like this if it makes hardware start working than if all it does is mean you’re not using a proprietary driver and in the medium term likely have worse performance.

Shit, just linux.

Use this community for anything related to linux for now, if it gets too huge maybe there will be some sort of meme/gaming/shitpost spinoff. Currently though… go nuts
