I’m sure that’s part of it but think it’s more that they just have to be contrary. They have no policy position on anything except to disagree with whatever Carney is doing. If he capitulated and signed a crappy trade deal they’d be saying he’s weak and should have stood his ground.
Some of them, for sure! I learned from covid that about 10% of the population is contrarian, and though that overlaps somewhat with conservatism, it’s also prevalent among self-described “antiauthoritarians” who are into alternative health and politics (they think). This pans out with the similar percentage of antimaskers in 1917 and during the smallpox inoculations.
