On OpenStreetMap, there’s an emergency=defibrillator object. It can be tagged with information like opening hours (e.g. if it’s inside a location that’s only open certain hours), a description of the location (“at the front desk”), etc.
For example, on the Android/iOS app OsmAnd, you can select ‘Defibrillator’ as a point of interest (POI) Additionally, choosing ‘Healthcare’ POI type will show not just hospitals, clinics, etc., but also AED locations.
Other emergency devices, like emergency phones, are also mappable.
Why YSK: quick access to defibrillators can save lives and significantly improve quality-of-life outcomes. The more complete this data is, the more useful somebody can actually expect it to be in an emergency. Even if the data isn’t queried during the emergency, seeing it on the map could help users know where they are ahead of time.
I’ve got a phone app (PulsePoint Respond) that’s hooked in with local computer-aided dispatch systems so I’ll get alerts for nearby emergencies. They also have one that shows AEDs and other resources (e.g. narcan kits) from these registries. I’ve been the first trained person to arrive a few times and, though one was super obviously dead, it’s been a useful tool for getting the process started while EMS was on the way.

It’s a public app, anyone can install it. It does rely on local agencies being willing and able to connect it to their systems but that’s not a hard sell since the decision-makers tend to be receptive to the idea that more/faster help is better. https://www.mdpi.com/2077-0383/15/1/5 gets into some of the stats on incidents where it’s been activated if you’re interested.
