At some point, the limiting factor is going to start being cooling in the room.
That’s 900W for the GPU alone. The CPU can probably be north of another 200W, and then you will have other hardware you need to power.
I have a space heater that can do 400W on low, 800W on high.
Plus, power. A standard US household circuit is 15 (or 20, in some cases) amps, so even if you’re dedicating an entire 15A household circuit to the PC, that’s 1800W you can drive.
Big brain idea… Make a unit that you can bury in the ground and cool it with geothermal
As a European I can’t help smirking a bit, we have 2300 W on a single 10 amp connection.
Usually kitchen has its own even in small apartments.
Most have 400V 16A available in the kitchen, allowing for instance our stove to use up to 6400 W! With induction stove, we can give so much power that a ceramic frying pan cracks around the edge!! And not the cheap ones.
It’s absolutely insane how fast you can boil water, way way faster than anything gas. It’s also way more energy efficient as a gas stove waste approximately 55% on average, and even more on high settings, as the heat simply escapes around pots and pans.OK I guess i went a bit besides the topic, I just find it amazing how powerful a modern stove is. 😋
Actually we’ve got 10 amps for lights and 16 for outlets where I live in Europe. So even more power.
Yes, I think 16A is pretty common, maybe it’s only old installations that are 10A?

Yeah, there are also 240V three-phase heavy appliance circuits in the US for things like stoves, air conditioners, washing machines, and such. But that usually isn’t what one is going to be running a PC on.

But we still typically have more power in standard sockets with 2300W being the minimum.
So not quite as close to the limit of a normal household socket here. But it’s still crazy.
Honestly this doesn’t prove anything. It needs more testing to prove it. Now replacing 3 8-pin(24 total) connectors with 1 12 pin connector with less surface area is bound to cause problems as it has shown many many times. I would have looked to a blade based power connector with thicker wires, but less of them. Maybe a 4 blade 10awg design for consumers with options for 6 and 8 blades in the server. That would probably allow for over 900w peak per pair based on my limited guessing.
I thought the issue was that there’s no way to manage the current, so cables would catch fire because all the power would pass through a single wire instead of spreading the load over multiple. I’m not an electrician though, that’s just what I remember from all the testing done in the 40xx cards
It is actually the connector that is over heating due to poor contact or lack of contact and an excess amount of the current going through 1 or 2 pins beyond what they are capable of carrying. You could send over all the current with 1 positive and 1 ground if it were thick enough , but that would be a thick, bulky wire. Car stereos use 12 volt and you used to find a lot of people putting 1000w+(peak) systems in their trunk. The 8pin connector has more surface area, but was designed and specced the wires and contacts for a lower wattage. It is hard to re-spec that all these years later with all power supplies out there safely.
