is it the thumbnail that appears in Lemmy for this post? I don’t see where it came from, as I can’t see it on the Phoronix article though

What a silly thing to fight for. This sentence was read, corrected and rewritten by three different AIs.

“Using a machine, made through evil, reurgitating stolen art that threatens artists is bad!”

        “Haha you’re silly.”

Well, you do you. Other than you DeckPacker’s backbone makes them look hot, rich & sexy.

So HDMI 2.1 had been blocked by the HDMI forum, despite AMD having done a lot of work to try to persuade them that it should be allowed in the open source drivers. It’s not clear to me why the forum was blocking it, although a comment on Phoronix says, “Which companies are shareholders in this organization? Ah…MS. Apple, Nvidia, Broadcom etc… Hummmm !!!”

Valve is rumoured to be behind some of the recent work on AMDGPU, motivated by the Steam Machine - a different comment on Phoronix says, “When the Steam Machine benchmarks came out, showing performance inferior to the PS5, I got the impression it was limited by software rather than hardware”, which sounds plausible. Getting HDMI 2.1 working on the Steam boxes is likewise probably a priority for them, as some gamers won’t switch away from Windows until it’s there.

It’s not mentioned in the Phoronix write-up, but I presume the implication is the HDMI forum has relented and finally given their blessing to this work, rather than Valve is just YOLOing it.

There’s also the cleanroom theory of AMD & Valve having some devs sit in an environment without access to specs for 2.1 or anything and reverse-engineering the whole thing from scratch. Because for some stupid legal reason that’d be allowed.

Being a shareholder in a IP organization isn’t a out having a control in the result. Even if AMD wants something, the appointees of other companies might not agree due to charter or politics.

It’s a microcosm of capitalism and bureaucracy

Plenty of high-end monitors need more bandwidth than DisplayPort 1.4a can provide if operating uncompressed, but models with a DP 2.x port typically cost a lot more because it needs reasonably expensive hardware to make it work. That means that if you use DP, then you have to compromise between spending more money or using Display Stream Compression. Monitors needing that much bandwidth basically always have an HDMI 2.1 port that can handle it uncompressed, but without this patch, if you used HDMI under Linux with a Radeon GPU, it wouldn’t run in HDMI 2.1 mode, so would give even less bandwidth than DisplayPort 1.4a, and you’d experience even more compression artefacts, despite the same configuration working perfectly under Windows.

Oh. Wow. I didn’t know that.

I need to look at my monitor then.

I have a 7900XTX, and I don’t actually know what it spits out
