They took their shot, and missed. To try to execute her again would be Cruel & Unusual. You don’t have to let her out, but her sentence should be commuted to life in prison without parole.
Tennessee everybody. There is a reason they haven’t executed any woman in 200 years and she wanted a firing squad.
Edit.
AnyoneThey haven’t executed a woman in 200 years.
They screwed up another lethal injection in May.
First woman in 200 years.
Okay that killing sounds brutal as fuck, but also she was a mentally ill kid. Capital punishment is wrong, but not every case is a hill I’ll die on, you know?
But there is not even a semblance of justice here.
At 18, she brutally murdered a classmate and coreobated reports had her bragging about the murder before and after it occurred. That is not a mental health episode. That is real evil.
Just because you have trauma, you don’t get a free pass to murder/mutilate your classmates.
No one said “free pass to murder.” Whether you agree that her family and society failed her or not, the idea that governments get to kill people is insanely dangerous.
And what is “coreobated?”
Sorry, corroborated!
Still on the fence about the death penalty, it’s a coin flip to me if it’s worse to spend your life in prison or take a quicker way out. She probably was failed to some degree, but that still isn’t an excuse for murder. Life in prison at a minimum.
No one deserves life in our current prison system.
I agree that there are people that need to be separated from society at least temporarily. We just need a better system before I’ll condemn anyone to it.
Our system is broken beyond belief for sure, but murder is something that puts you away for a long long time regardless what country you get convicted in, and rightfully so.
Not executing her isn’t a “pass”. She has been in prison 30 of her 50 years. I’m not even saying her debt is paid. I’m just saying she absolutely should not be executed.
Recording of her actual conversations after the fact point to the opposite if bragging. She was also sexually abused by multiple family members for her entire childhood and then thrown in a horribly abusive “troubled teen” camp where she underwent more abuse. Also her boyfriend threw her under the bus to avoid his own equal complicity in the murder. You have no clue what you are talking about and people like you disgust me.
Cool motive! Still murder.
The boyfriend also should have gotten life/death.
At what point is someone damaged enough to commit murder and get away with it or graced with a lighter sentence?
A lighter sentence than death? Okay she committed murder as a child and has spent her entire adult life in prison, showed remorse, got mental health support and is even a mentor for other prisoners. Why does she deserve death?
First, 18 years old is not a child. Life in prison would work too. Someone capable and motivated enough to carry out murder shouldn’t be intermingling with the general populous. I think there are crimes out there that are unforgivable if done intentionally.
18 is a child, especially for someone who was deprived of any innocence due to being sexually assaulted from birth. The human brain doesn’t complete development until mid 20s, this is a scientific fact. Just because someone is legally old enough to be treated as an adult in the Draconian legal system that is famous for abusing and wrongfully incriminating people, doesn’t mean that people are fully developed by 18. The legal system used to allow for slavery and marriage of adults to children. If all you are going off of is the letter of the law, you are revealing yourself to be more evil than the person you seem happy to condemn to death
First, 18 years old is not a child.
Eww. I really shudder to think of what your ideas of consent are.
Maybe you should actually read about the case you sick fuck.
An 18 year old that can legally give consent is by all legal standards, an adult, and fully expected to abide by the law.
Also, never mentioned sex/consent at all. Why you gotta get weird with it? An adult women that murders someone is just as much a murderer than an adult man that murders someone.
I mean, 30 years in prison and a botched execution, it doesn’t sound like she got a free pass at all. I’m sure she can be released on parole at this point, I mean, surely the US prison system has rehabilitated her by now… /s (sadly)
What the actual fuck.
Become ungovernable.
Also, the lethal injection is no less cruel or painful than other forms of execution.
I don’t know, the Head Ripping Off Machine Ohio switched to seems pretty humane.
Also, the lethal injection is no less cruel or painful than other forms of execution.
It is actually more inhumane - since it’s formulated in a way to provide extreme pain. A simple chop to the head is more humane than that injection.
They used pentobarbital. It is a drug that is used for medical treatments and euthanasia. It does not “provide extreme pain”. It essentially puts you to sleep and at high enough doses, it will depress the body’s functions leading to respiratory arrest.
From the NYT: “Ms. Pike’s lawyers said that while two syringes of pentobarbital had been administered, she did not lose consciousness. She still had a heartbeat, they said, and was audibly snoring.”
Where is the extreme pain here?
If you are thinking of potassium chloride, which is known to cause an extreme sensation of burning at the injection site, it was not used for this execution.
Ethics/morality of execution aside, these comments are ignorant and inflammatory.
The reason people tend to survive this stuff is because the medical community isn’t about killing people. You get whatever schlub that failed a phlebotomy class and became a prison guard, whatever drugs pharmaceutical companies are still willing to sell you, and it’s pure barbarism.
They’re not even buying from pharmaceutical companies - none will sell. They’re using whatever fly-by-night pharmacy is willing to make a quick buck that day. Formulas can be inaccurate or tampered, and sometimes they’re given the wrong drug entirely.
Dang, didn’t know that. When even Pfizer etc is unwilling to take your money… yikes. Getting injected with toilet lean is just heinous.
yet another reason why a state should not be allowed to kill people. her estate has a big lawsuit to win here, on top of all of this nonsense.
Hopefully one day the Third World will end this barberous practice and join the international rules-based order.
Sounds like she served her sentence, let her go
She tortured, mutilated, and murdered a 19 yo. I don’t believe in the death penalty, but she has absolutely not served her sentence. This should be life without parole, something her lawyers argued for.
Hey, it doesn’t matter what you believe, the sentence handed down was lethal injection, not life without parole, and she completed that sentence, twice.
by your logic why don’t we just ditch the legal system and throw everyone accused by the state into a hole forever?
If you don’t like it, petition the government to change the rules by engaging in the democratic process as is your right
The law is nothing if not semantics. Technically the sentence handed down was death, not lethal injection. If the sentence was lethal injection then they couldnt have given her a second one in the first place. Lethal injection is just the last remaining legal means to hand down the sentence in most states
If shes alive, then shes obviously not dead. So she hasn’t completed the terms of the sentence.
That said, they definitely shouldn’t be killing her in the first place
I honestly believe if it’s gotten to the point that you’re willing to commit a murderous act, the death penalty would have never been a deterrant. Make murderers pay for their crimes through a lifetime of slave labor authorized by the 13th amendment.
