I oppose Alberta separatism primarily because of the border gore it would create. Like yeah sure there are plenty of other reasons why it would suck, but the Canada-US border is pretty stupid as it is and this would make it 1000x worse.
Let me guess. Lot of redneck cousin fuckers in Alberta?
I’ve heard it described as the Texas of Canada, so… Texas may not be know for cousin fucking, but we sure as shit have dipshit rednecks coming out of our ears.
Ah, not to worry. I predict the current referendum vote is to go 40% / 30% / 30% for ‘No further referendum’ / ‘Referendum to go’ / ‘referendum to stay’ respectively, which our premier will say ‘Oh, looks like 60% of folks want some form of further referendum’, so they can drag this out for another few years while we all grow even more furious about it. Then they’ll have another referendum and then finally find out that the majority of people would actually rather stay in Canada, or, more likely, further manoeuvring to keep the whole thing dragging out for all time - more time for the UPC to use our own money to feed us lies and propaganda.
It seems like the perfect issue to keep us all angry and give her leverage to get gifts and hall passes from the feds. I think the main threats to her are the separatists inside her party ousting her, or another provincial conservative party popping up to split the vote. I don’t think either are putting her at significant risk though.
I will continue to hope otherwise.
Yah all polls regarding Alberta separatistm almost alway come out as 75% to outright stay in Canada, whatever tactics they’re using to try and minipulate people aren’t working, especially since America has become such and obvious dumpster fire.
It would be so funny if Alberta successfully exited Canada to lose all of those Canadian perks, like nationalized healthcare. Welcome to the free market baby.
The face Americans make at them after Albertans get a 100K hospital bill after losing socialized medicine:

The regional management of the province of Alberta seems to be privatizing as much healthcare as possible, and as quickly as possible. An american “ha ha” style healthcare is already their goal, and the people voting for them don’t seem to understand the notion of Finding Out.
UCP claims that healthcare is a Bolshevik plot!
Bootlickers don’t understand that they hate the bootlickers as much as the non-bootlickers
Trump is excited about having free Albertan slaves.
As an American it was always somewhat puzzling to understand the deeper drivers of cultural differences between the Canadian provinces having never been anywhere but BC and briefly, but the book “On Oil” is a great recent history of the spread of oil culture and money in Alberta, the Texas influences and ties there and helps frame why so much money and media influence is being welded against Canadian values and democracy right now.
It’s short and incredibly informative. https://www.biblioasis.com/shop/new-releases/on-oil/
Newfoundland & Labrador is the least americanised english speaking province.
“English speaking”.

Sorry, transplanted Nova Scotian in Ontario. I love Newfoundlanders. I just can’t understand them when they get drunk and start talking to each other.
I was at the bar with my Uncle when we were talking to a Newfoundlander and non-Newfoundlander. The non-Newfoundlander was amazed my Uncle could understand the Newfoundlander.
Stay where ur at bye, I’ll come where ya too.
Used to work with an Irishman in Vancouver. We were drinking in a bar by site after work on a Friday and I had to stop him from starting a fight with a group of 6 Newfs because he thought they were making fun of him.
We ended up having a good laugh with them about it after he’d chilled out, but it was touch and go for a minute there…They were the last region added to Canada and some of them were horrified that Nova Scotia wasn’t as loyal to the crown.
Fun fact, the root word of “Viking” in old norse is “vík” which means a bay or inlet. The literal translation of the word Viking then is “Bayman”, which if you know Newfies well, is a term they are very familiar with. A thousand years and the meaning of the term hasn’t really changed that much.
Beautiful up there too
“Province” Yukon and NWT would like a chat.
First thing America will do to Alberta is let the rats invade.
Which rats?
Actual rats, Alberta works hard to keep them out and have done a pretty good job so I hear. So yes if Alberta defects they won’t even have that point of pride anymore.
And Albertans think the US would give two shits what Alberta wants over remaining in Canada? 😂
The boot represents inequality and $700 monthly insurance plans that cover 30% of healthcare needs.
If that happens then Cascadia must happen.

When you look at the geography and political identity of the US and Canada, its mildly surprising that this didn’t happen sooner.
Not holding my breath, though. The ties that bind regions within a nation are ultimately far more about bureaucracy than culture or identity.
Do you mean the PNW and BC? THEN YES.
I have more in common with BC than anywhere else in America. I’m tired of having my lot thrown in with red state shitholes.
Secession is the democratic human right of self determination.
About bureaucracy vs culture, this is a good example for the Donbass and Crimea. Crimea had been Russia for centuries, and was only associated with the Ukraine as a bureaucratic move by Khrushchev under the Soviet Union. The people are overwhelmingly ethnic Russian, and overwhelmingly support Russian annexation after the coup. They have very little in common with ethnic Ukrainian nationalists in Lviv.
People have a right to exist, not nations. When they have no other choice then this makes them nothing more than serfs within neofeudal bondage.
I’m tired of having my lot thrown in with red state shitholes.
Even “red” states tend to be a dichotomy of urban liberals and rural conservatives, or college educated liberals and service sector conservatives, or minority liberals and white conservatives. Some of the reddest counties in America are in New York and California. Some of the bluest are in Florida and Texas.
Secession is the democratic human right of self determination.
Secession from whom, by whom, through what political mechanism?
If you live in a neighborhood and five of your next door neighbors are sovereign citizens, are you now in their country cause they took a vote during a BBQ you weren’t invited to?
I get what you’re saying, and it only brings up more reasons that our system is as outmoded as it is undemocratic. States are an archaic and arbitrary construct. Even though anyone would agree that one-person-one-vote is a fundamental democratic principle, we don’t have that. A Wyoming voter has SEVENTY TIMES more voting power in the Senate than a Californian. States vote on the national issues there, not people. States are no more people than corporations are.
I don’t think there’d be much of a problem if we voted across the board, but we don’t, so state secession is the only option.
All other avenues are closed within a system designed to not allow democracy, nevermind reform.
How do you get states to abolish themselves?
Alberta cannot be allowed to do this
Technically, this still keeps Cascadia intact, which is the real long term goal.
