No, I’m actually a car enthusiast and would rather we had more train routes so there’d be fewer people driving. Trouble is, it’s often hard to justify spending tens of millions for 3 people. Small country and sparsely populated

Imagine if all the people who could work from home were allowed to.

A lot of people can’t, but they’d have the roads all to themselves. Everybody wins, other than the people who own property downtown, but they make the decisions so we can’t do it.

Unless some sort of external event forces the issue and then we can do it and it works great but we have to go back to the office ASAP because of reasons.

Honestly most actual car enthusiasts i know are typically down at a track, at a showing, or in a garage.

Anyone actually on the road tends to NOT be a enthusiast and instead a regular person suffering in a 9 to 5 5 day a week hell hole job

Yeah I was gonna say, maybe not most but many car enthusiasts I know are loud about being in favor of more public transit, because:

      Traffic sucks

Cars are in fact somewhat complicated and need to be maintained, when they are not, this endangers everyone, so just let people who can’t handle that ride a bus or light rail or bike

New and used car market/prices is/are a total shit show, most people are just getting fleeced

      … etc

I think the OP is confusing ‘morons who are flexxing via cars they can’t afford’ vs ‘actual car enthusiast’.

There certainly is an overlap, but the obnoxious idiot morons are obviously overrepresented on social media comapred to reality, because non obnoxious idiot morons tend to not be attention seeking thus do not flood the internet with videos about how ‘awesome’ they are.

Definitely. I hate cars in general. They make just fucking going outside an awful experience because of the literally, actually carcinogenic gasses they spew into the air I breath as some daft prick drives by on their way to pick up a jug of milk; however, one of my favourite youtube channels is Bad Obsession Motorsport where they’ve just “completed” Project Binky: a Austin Mini that they shoved a v8 into and gave 4WD. It’s a really cool little car.

Really the only people that should drive are people with mobility issues, bus drivers, trades workers (though they might be able to get away with a good electric cargo bike), and most emergency response workers. Everyone else should BMW: Bike, Metro, or Walk. Also the odd project/collector car on a Sunday afternoon or whatever.

I like cars when I can have fun with them. I can tinker with every little aspect and remove components and tinker with the ECU and throw it around a track and most of all do it in like BeamNG.Drive so there are no real consequences

but they are not proper modes of transit for the vast majority

The wheelchair probably. I used to have a racecar. I won most of my races. I tell anyone I meet that is thinking of buying a racecar to befriend a coke/heroine addict and see if they can afford that person’s addiction. If you can afford as much coke/heroine as your new friend wants, then you might be able to afford a racecar. I figured it up when I finally quit. I actually won about $300,000 in prizes over a 10 year period. I spent almost $450,000 on my car in the same time.

Wheelchair parts are either stuff I can get at the hardware store or Medical Grade Stuff with one or two vendors in the entire world.

If I add together the chair, van, and maintenance of both I am probably around where you are in terms of net spend over the last decade and a bit.

If I didn’t have handy friends and an engineering degree and just bought a new chair every couple of years the way the company wants, I’d be waaaaaay over. Right now I’m at 4x the nominal service life for it, I’m worried that the fork the front casters are mounted in is starting to deform, I might have to make friends with someone who has a metal shop…

Legit my dad, he’s a car guy with an autistic level of knowledge on every part of his cars (and despises all car companies for removing the pressure gauge from instrument clusters), but always uses his bike and public transport to get most places, since car traffic is shit here.

With the current state of the auto industry in North America, my opinion is actually starting to drift that way. And my car is 11 years old.

Driving on the road is a game where we constantly re-evaluate how much our time is worth other people’s lives.
