Cool, can’t wait for this to pass and I have to rent a server in Panama just to read my email.

If there is a company in Panama that offers services in Canada, that means for their Canadian customers they are keeping 6 months of metadata in an easily accessible server in Canada. If they aren’t, then Canada must IP block their services. VPN services that do not keep 6 months of your metadata also must be IP blocked.
The only way to get around this is to physically leave Canada.

This includes the team behind Lemmy. Being Canadian, after this bill, if they aren’t logging the metadata of every single ping that reaches their website and making sure it is easily accessible, they are committing a crime.

When your VPS gets blocked get a new one.

No level of government has the time to play whack-a-mole. If they start blanket blocking IP ranges it will be too disruptive to legit traffic.

No level of government has the time to play whack-a-mole.

Hence why the likely outcome of this is that any website that originates outside of Canada will just be blocked, unless the company agrees to maintaining 6 months of metadata in Canada. They can just tell the ISPs to block any traffic outside of Canada and have a whitelist.

Whatever data that comes into Canada will have its metadata stored in easily accessable data centres.

They managed to do this with the Great Firewall of China, so don’t think that it isn’t possible.
