Me and my best friend at college (high school for y’all) were basically Harold and George from Captain Underpants but in the 20th Century.
This is exactly how it went, no character development but plenty of (quite progressive at the time) characterisation. And violence, looooots of violence.
FYI, The Adventures of Captain Underpants came out in 1997, and the second and third books came out in 1999.
By a slim margin, Harold and George from Captain Underpants are “Harold and George from Captain Underpants but in the 20th century”.
Technically correct (the best kind of correct.)
I only encountered it in the 2010’s and had naïvely assumed it was from around that time.
