They’re better than no bike infrastructure at all, but they’re still suck city compared to dedicated bike paths with physical barriers between cyclists/cars and even cyclists/pedestrians.
they suck on stroads, yes. they’re mostly fine in tight downtown areas alongside a single vehicle lane.
I think most people refer to physically separated bike paths that share the same road surface as bike lanes. personally, I don’t really like completely separate bike paths (around here, most commonly multi use paths), because they’re not actually designed as infrastructure, but as recreation, so connections and directness are poor.
but, yes, just tossing in a bike lane is not the proper solution, it’s a bandaid on the way to a complete infrastructure replan. and fuck you Ontario for blocking them and ripping them out
I’d build those gosh darned commie railways, reduce roads* by a lane to make real dedicated bikeways and build euro style 4-5 story apartment blocks with retail on the ground floor and make it all walkable!
Unfortunately you’d have to solve the wage theft problem first unless you want only execs and the yuppiest yuppies living there. They were making similar plans in a not so terribly lefty city, to tear down a few neighborhoods and some not even old office buildings to build something similar. It wasn’t for any utopian plan, but to further gentrify a core part of the city and make the land owners and developers filthy rich. There was no option to be grandfathered in. They were just going to tell hundreds of families and businesses to fuck off if they couldn’t afford to move into where they already lived.
Yea, and preferably in a better way than the section 8 projects that immediately turned into slums of a slightly more vertical sort. It cannot entail simply shoving all the poors together with little other assistance.
I hate riding my bike on streets. I’m lucky my area has dedicated bike zones all along the main streets, separated by barriers. I wish more side streets had them, as well. I wish f’in everywhere had them.
If bikes are violently forced to drive like cars against all reason, then car brians will be crying even louder while bicyclists are murdered at even higher rate.
Serious question: Imagine I’m sitting on my bike in front of your car at a red light. Which option would you prefer?
We both follow the supposed “law”. - I wait until the light turns green. I slowly accelerate from a stop to 12mph. You ride my ass for a block, then we repeat at the next light.
I follow the “law”. - You randomly run me over because of road rage or drunk or distracted or bad driver or fash terror or whatever.
I break the “law”. - I run the red light. When you get the green light, I’m half of a block ahead of you. If you catch up with me, I dip onto the (empty) sidewalk so you (and any other cars) can pass, then I drop back into the street behind the traffic.
I take option 3 because it’s better for the cars and much much safer for me. Car laws don’t make sense for bikes. Car brains really have no idea what it’s like out there. Height of privileged mentality.
My brother got a ticket for passing a stop sign when there was no traffic in an empty residential area – I think he was 16 years old at the time. This is Ontario and the cop needed to bump his quota it seems, but it does happen.
He may even build a BIKE LANE!!
COMMIE BASTARD
Bike lanes suck.

You would say that, ms_lane

Nuance? Here on reddi-?.. Wait, I can expect nuance here?
I’m actually impressed that the votes flip-flopped
Fuck. Don’t tell me those commie Demoncrats voted you into office too???

muahahahahah!

For someone named lane, you seem awfully anti lane…
Also, yes please to all of your filthy commie ideas.

That’s a fair warning and a real shame.
Bring back public housing.

Unprotected bike lanes are actually worse than nothing so yeah.
I miss living on the Toronto harbourfront and being able to bike an hour in either direction along the lake with very minimal interactions with cars…
the other day i watched a car slip into the bike lane for 100yards. good thing cyclists around here know better than to take the road.
I hate riding my bike on streets. I’m lucky my area has dedicated bike zones all along the main streets, separated by barriers. I wish more side streets had them, as well. I wish f’in everywhere had them.
Bike lanes are fine but also can we start ticketing bicyclists who fail basic road rule safety like blowing off stop signs and lights?
You may be interested in seeing a report of what happens when bicyclists do just that .
Sure, once they start murdering people at a rate similar to cars, we should enforce the laws on each group with equal vigor.
