At least the rumors that it’d be a foldable seem to be wrong.

It’s also initially launching with android 17. The article said that Graphene won’t be ready for it until some time next year. I wonder if the devs are deliberately putting some separation between the hardware launch and OS availability so that they can avoid getting caught up in Motorola’s corporate panic attack when this thing doesn’t sell.

The foldable is the next one to get support after signature 27.

Not offering a pre-installed GrapheneOS version feels like a misstep. Plenty of people are aware of the brand for security and privacy, and would pay extra to have it pre-installed.

Maybe we will see some re-sellers pop up, but I would prefer direct-from-manufacturer.

Not to mention, they could get the keys right from day one and eliminate (Google’s) “alternate OS is booting” boogieman screen.

They aren’t shipped with GrapheneOS because the developers of GrapheneOS explicitly don’t want this. They dont want any possibility of some backdoor caused by the manufacturer to bring down their reputation.

It not being shipped with GrapheneOS is on purpose.

Yes. I’m waiting for a chill fork of GrapheneOS. I love what the developers have accomplished. LineageOS seems close, but not quite there with features, last I checked.

I was happy with decent default security and privacy in the past, and I could be, again, if it ever returns.

I would be glad to purchase a device from a trusted party, who pre-installed public source code, on open hardware.

I’ll be very pleased if Framework ever releases a phone.

And sure, most people, in general, are clueless, about most things. Point granted.

But the people with a clue about today’s brutal privacy situation want device that is reasonably assured to be respect their wishes, and not chained to the whim of some asshole CEO.

Perfect is lovely. But good enough can still sell very well.

This is pure cope, there is no way “plenty of people” are lining up to pay this amount of money for a Motorola phone with a niche operating system.

Just because something isn’t mainstream doesn’t mean it would not make plenty of money.

As was pointed out above, Motorola probably underestimates the casual folks who would pay extra to have GrapheneOS pre-installed, because the GrapheneOS developers are so rabidly against trusting anyone else to do the install.

But many GrapheneOS users just like having a qucik toggle for the microphone and camera.

(Side question: Why the fuck hasn’t such a basic privacy feature made it into basic Android, anyway? Or has it, and I missed it?)

And yes, there’s always a buyer for a phone this expensive. For some people, it will be their only computer for five to ten years, anyway.

Not having it support tap to pay basically makes it a non starting for selling it.

The amount of stupid selling a phone with out that feature, while the same phone other times it works basically would just cause endless problems.

          Yes people are that stupid
