The subject is so interesting, but I forgot how cancerous and disgusting YouTube videos became. I rarely watch videos on it anymore.
The stupid doll stuff, the advertisers, the unnecessary fluff… Even the most interesting subjects become unwatchable. I would like to watch a video with just the comparisons, which are pretty cool.

It is a job for him, he advocates for himself for a minimal amount of the video, like I get that it sucks that he has to do that, but we live in a capitalist society and he has to survive too, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t like what he does, it just means he also has to make money to survive
There was a time when people worked jobs and made videos to share something interesting. Sure it wasn’t broadcast quality, but it was a person sharing something to the world. Now people are just feeding the algorithm and their pocket because apparently there’s no other way. I get times are different, but it doesn’t make it right.
The video and information is very interesting nonetheless. CRTs also had a nice warm feeling, literally, because of that sweet radiation.
These people still exist, they are just harder to find

I used to make Blender videos back in the day. I loved when people liked what I did or wanted to learn. Charging money for it would destroy the magic and make it a job and eventually I would make garbage like this to maximise the profit.
I deleted my YouTube account when I realised what it was becoming. I had no idea it would actually get much, much, much worse than I could ever imagine.
Entirely fine if his videos aren’t to your taste, but to be fair to him he keeps his videos different. The ads are ads, but they’re not just script reads; they’re often actually entertaining (Also see TomSka who turns his ads into full blown short skits, often worthy of re-watches because they’re just damn funny). He has a style that’s actually unique, the videos are well thought out and researched, but it’s definitely not everyone’s style. The paper dolls are fun and have a lot of work put into them. The sets often continue from the last video and have fun continuity (IIRC in a Need for Speed video a car destroyed the cardboard house and it’s been in ruins since)
There’s a LOT of slop on YouTube, but I wouldn’t lump Noodle into that category.
It may be a generation thing. For quite a while YouTube was about content, not presentation. You usually watched the video about something and that was all the video showed, specially because monetisation wasn’t so common. Even garbage was mostly just the garbage itself (and there was lots of it, but different than now). It was a treasure chest, full of content people uploaded just because they wanted other people to see.
I guess this guy is OK for the current "standards*, but that’s a very, very low bar now. I’m not criticising him in particular, but YouTube in general. It’s always a shock to me when I get exposed to it, which is luckily rare.
You should give SponsorBlock a try (it’s available for browsers, as a feature in the YouTube ReVanced app for mobile, and SmartTubeNext for TVs).
It automatically skips every annoyance you tell it to; not just sponsored segments but like and subscribe reminders, “hey guys” intros, unnecessary fluff, outro screens, non-music parts in music videos… There’s even a “skip to highlight” feature to get straight to the point.
It makes the modern YouTube experience so much better, that I flat out refuse to watch YT without it.
It’s a good option for those wanting to use YouTube. In my case, I just avoid it where I can. I’m not going to fight against a content creator. If he wants to make videos for algorithm garbage it’s because he doesn’t respect audience like me. He doesn’t have to make what I like, I don’t have to watch it. It’s just annoying that from time to time I fall prey to a video trough Lemmy.
I use newpipe by the way. YouTube itself is blocked on my browser. But I use it too rarely to bother with more blockers.
Unfortunately we now need some kind of abstract representation of a host to verify that the content isn’t AI slop with a fake voice over.
Is that a thing now?
Either way that just makes a shitshow even worse. The only hope of the internet is smaller areas like Lemmy. And even that is being destroyed. The amount of ai slop I see on the front page is increasing, and it’s not their fault. They took the content from a cesspool like Facebook and didn’t realise what it was. Even I saw many things and I didn’t realise it was a fake. And when I do, it make me want to use the internet less.
Maybe it’s the whole internet doomed.

I’ve been playing 90’s Nintendo games like Chrono Trigger because I was too busy in the 90’s to do anything other than PC gaming. Now I feel like I’m still missing out because I’m playing them on my collection of retro Handhelds like Retroid, Anbernic and Miyoo Mini all of which are LCD and don’t have the horsepower to do full crt emulation.
That pixel art on CRT is amazing. I had no idea. I started computing on CRT (technically my first computer class was on punch cards) and always hated it for the misconvergence and geometry distortion.
And this is the reason why I use pixel filters like HQ4X, because it’s the closest you’ll get to how the games actually looked back in the day, with the added bonus of a much increased resolution.
IMO if you can see the pixels, you’re not playing vintage games the right way. You couldn’t see them then, so why should you see them now? CRT filters are getting much better too if you hate the HQX look.
See if they can handle a ntsc filter, thats where most of the magic is. beautiful analog noise!
