This is exciting. Is kinda weird though that the website treats this like any other release. When I navigated to download it, I had to dig a bit to find out cosmic is involved. Why not push this harder? They should be proud of the accomplishment and sell themselves on having built something huge and different.

I think it is a smart play.

They are getting lots of press in the places where the people that care go.

On their website, they focus on the benefits of their platform for customers. From that perspective, the new COSMIC is just a refinement on what they were shipping before.

And this is just the beginning. COSMIC itself is still fairly basic. And the “new” Pop!OS is based on an LTS base that is already 2 years old. None of that is a problem but it is not a hand they want to overplay.

They may actually make a bigger deal about the benefits when 26.04 ships. Things will be a bit more “industry leading” by then.

I myself had a ton of problems with the beta to the point I eventually rolled back, but they are doing great work over there. In my case I have a laptop with a nvidia card so I think that could have been contributing to my issues. I’ll be checking back in with them in a year to see if things have improved, otherwise I’m probably headed yo another distro.

When I moved my kid’s desktop away from Windows I chose pop!_OS because I figured it would not only be good for newcomers, but it would also be friendlier with nvidia, which it was but I didn’t want to risk it with the Cosmic beta. I think I’ll still wait a bit before upgrading from 22.10 but it’s almost time to move forward.

Having tried Cosmic, I’m not totally convinced it’s good enough to be ready for prime time, but that’s pretty subjective. Overall I think it’s good to have another DE in the scene and at the very least Cosmic is a good start.

Last I had it on my desktop was like 2 months ago. Oddities with games here and there was a deal breaker for me. Don’t remember if I could alt tab over video game windows yet. Not being able to alt-tab other windows over a video game is a deal breaker for me. There were random nich applications I don’t recall that didn’t handle dialog windows/file pickers well. That may be better by now. The file explorer is really bare bones even compared to nautilus. Not expecting Dolphin but I want something better.

High hopes though. I may give it another go as my primary with 26.04. The Cosmic applications are all pretty fast. I think I like how it looks more than KDE just KDE is way more fully featured

I find it pretty solid if a bit bare bones. With the basics in place, it should improve fairly quickly.

They are planning a 26.04 LTS release. We will see what it looks like by then.

I disagree. I think it’s very mature. I didn’t experience any problems over the course of a few months, and that was with the Beta.

I have been using it as a daily driver since before it went beta. After the beta, I have found it quite stable. And recently it have been rock solid. There are still some things missing (like it would be nice with a calendar app, support for firmware upgrades and so on), and some things that are a bit rough. But overall I find it to be a quite good release, and since nothing comes close to their window management (the tiling implementation is really great) it compensates for any minor rough edges you might find.

That’s cool, I’ve been wondering when they were gonna release COSMIC with the OS.

Pop!_OS was the first distro I tried, cause’ some old Linus Tech Tips video talked about how it’s very good for newcomers to Linux.
