Can somebody remind me about how this works again on the fediverse please? When a federated server goes down, does its content and comments - which presumably were circulated to other federated servers - still exist? Can you do something like a raid parity reconstruction?

The current way the fediverse exists is all the posts and users only really exist on the host domain. So if it goes down everything is effectively lost. It might exist briefly on some servers, but it takes manual intervention to save it, and it can’t be re sent out to anyone.

The posts and comments can still be seen across the Fediverse. Images and videos are going to depend, your instance may have cached it, or maybe the post was to externally hosted media. In these cases the media will persist. However in the majority of cases the photos and videos were uploaded directly and will be lost.

For example: [NSFW, obviously] https://thelemmy.club/c/boobs@lemmynsfw.com?dataType=Post&sort=TopAll (your instance may be automatically translating that link)

It appears that nothing is wrong… Other than there’s no new content.

Actually the lemmynsfw image servers appear to be up for now. So if anyone wants to archive do it now.
