The thing I took from this…and I didn’t take much, was the line “you’re going to die here, and that’s okay.”

Subnautica has a shipwreck plot. You play as Some Guy: Space Janitor, a man with no voice and no characteristics. Your ship is shot down and crashes on a strange alien world, and from the moment you take control to the moment you press the Win The Game button, your goal is “Survive, escape.” What action you’ll need to take to implement that goal change throughout the game, but “survive, escape” is always your ultimate goal.

Below Zero had a plot they threw away at the last minute and replaced with You are Robin Ayou, xenobiologist and idiot. Your sister Samantha, robotics expert and idiot, has gotten herself killed as an Alterra employee on 4546B. Robin, not believing Alterra’s report that her death was caused by her own negligence, books passage to 4546B to investigate for herself. Robin more or less intentionally maroons herself alone on a hostile world with basically no tools, and almost immediately gets MechaEeyore downloaded into her brain. Sam’s plot becomes entirely optional as the game is actually about building MechaEeyore a body of his own.

Subnautica 2…the plot seems to have a “marooned beyond a point of no return” plot. Not sure how they’re going to put a sense of urgency behind that but we’ll see I guess.

To me it sounds more like Subnautica 2 has a “welcome to the planet that psychically induces you into a suicide cult” plot, which I’d say is a bit more interesting than “marooned beyond a point of no return.” A “solve the mystery of this planet” plot is quite in-line with Subnautica 1, I’d say.

Edit: The line “beautiful place to die over and over again” also kind of implies that death is less permanent over there. That could also be an interesting plot point. Perhaps something similar to SOMA.

I hadn’t heard the update yet.

‘It’s going to be extremely hard to repair the relationship:’ The Subnautica 2 legal dispute is far from over

The legal battle is far from over, though. Delaware State Court of Chancery, which Otto said is a specialized court specifically for Delaware corporations, broke the case into two parts. The first covers Krafton’s interference in the Subnautica 2 early access release date and control of the studio, and the second will determine whether Krafton’s actions wrongfully impaired the earnout.

If Krafton is found to have done the latter, Gill, McGuire, and Cleveland will be awarded damages on top of the opportunity to still achieve the $250 million payout.

“A court case can take a considerable amount of time,” Otto said. “As you can imagine, the legal question about whether Krafton illegally took over control over the studio is quite urgent. Losing control over a game studio (especially in development) can cause a lot of harm. The longer you wait, the bigger the impact is. Or as we call it in legal language, it can lead to ‘irreparable damage.’”

Yeah Krafton can fuck right off, but at this point game sales will determine what the devs get paid, so it’s well worth it to support the game. Assuming it’s up to snuff as a game of course. I’ll be waiting until after early access myself, but I have high hopes it’s a good game. The video shows what could be some nice improvements.

This echoes my thoughts. The harder Krafton gets fucked the better. I really enjoyed the first two Subnautica games, though. Very few games feed my inner child who dreamed of becoming a fish.

I believe co-op is a guaranteed thing, as they show it off in the trailer towards the end with the duo hanging off the sub and exploring together.

A co-op mode has been a major feature of their trailers and marketing so far. I’d definitely expect that to be one of the biggest new features.

Well, on the one hand, that just looks like a graphics upgrade from the first game. On the other hand, you wouldn’t expect the EA trailer to give too much away, there’s no evidence of the snowfox or the spy pengling in it, and the original is one of the finest games ever made so why mess? So I’m thinking that’s mostly positive. Will need to go and reinstall the original now I’ve seen this, too.

Good. The first game was amazing.

If all they’ve done is give it a graphics update and a fresh map, I’ll be happy as a clam. All I could have ever asked for.

Spy Pengling was a little bit annoying to use, but no big deal. Kind of entertaining with the voice lines, maybe.

The Snowfox is entirely optional, lol. And, honestly, it sucks. You can explore all the Snowfox areas far more safely and effectively with a prawn suit instead. Reject Snowfox, return to Prawn. It makes that part of the game so much better.

Snowfox and spy pengling were in Below Zero and worked because there were ice shelves that acted as landmasses in that title. Doubt they will make a reappearance in this one. Especially the spy pengling, it felt very gimmicky.

Though, the trailer did look like it teased new traversal tools and personal subs.
