TL;DW: These are called ferrite beads. Their composition is such that they dampen or eliminate unwanted RF from traveling along the wire and causing interference on other devices.
They function as low pass filters, acting as resistors once the frequencies are high enough. All wires function as antennas and these prevent spurious transmission or reception of signals.
They digest their prey very slowly.

Nah, they only stop RF interference, and at frequencies you won’t notice because few watch broadcast TV today.
Back in the 90’s, I had to add my own ferrite ring to the power supply cable for my 10mb Ethernet hub. Because I was getting interference on Channel 2 on my TV downstairs.
