OBGYN, metal speculum
Transcript
[Building with the word: Gynecology] [Doctor holds a metal speculum as he stands facing a woman’s legs in stirrups] Doctor: Alright, time to open up [Woman sitting with legs up in stirrups with a haunted look on her face looks away from the doctor] Woman: One night in 2006 I hit something with my car. I told myself it was an animal, but I know it was a person… I got scared and just kept driving. I drove all night and never looked back. [Doctor stands with speculum in hand and a shocked look of disbelief on his face.]

Errr, your Dad was a doctor and took his kids to work …?
How is that ethical?
After you ranted about how shit gynaecologists are?
That would be a drastic misreading of what I said above, as I did not nearly paint with such a broad brush. How about you read the comic again, read my comment again, and make an attempt to understand the relevant context?
He took us kids individually (at least, I believe he took the other three), obtained permission from both his director and the patient involved, and I only ever did sit in on one patient checkup. I don’t know why I said “gory” above, as it wasn’t gory at all, but just a bit awkward for me. He would also have us hang out in his personal office sometimes, allowed to look around and check things out, as well as take us around the hospitals he worked at, and all of that was (presumably) to help us better get a taste of what modern medical tech and his specific job were like.
I also want to point out that it’s SOP for many residents and trainees to be present for permissable examinations, and they may spend their whole shift doing that kind of thing. As a patient myself I’ve seen it at least a couple times, and like how it went with my dad, I was always asked to give my consent.
This all happened many years ago, and my dad’s no longer alive to ask him about this stuff.
Sorry, @jennar8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com, there was no trolling involved, and ultimately I’d say it did help me understand some things.
You said many gynaecologists are creeps, that’s a broad brush, and hasn’t been my experience (the ones that weren’t good were more on the side of ignorant of women’s lived experiences).
And, unless you were a doctor in training under your father’s supervision him taking you to work is still very weird and not normal (and if you were, there’s a conflict of interest in him doing his own kid’s training)
