I hadn’t thought about Canada at all, nor about how indigenous people in North America / Australia wouldn’t necessarily have been included in historical literacy rates – instead I’d glibly taken the literacy rates of the largest countries that ostensibly ‘spoke English’ at face value, and you make a compelling point.
