Even if you like all 3 of the other things, it doesn’t mean you need it in gaming. It’s not as though porn thinks it needs to blend in other attention competitions. A lot of games have math overlap. Gambling is for conning people bad at math.

In summary, this all seems like bad directions.

That doesn’t really seem like mutually-exclusive stuff.

You can definitely make video games that incorporate pornography.

Gambling is probably also generally-available, though some locales have pretty restrictive law on online gambling.

I don’t know about crypto, but if “crypto” in this context is effectively “gambling by trying to trade cryptocurrencies”, I’d think that that basically falls into the gambling category.

The article also mentions TikTok. I don’t know how readily you can do that — TikTok is maybe the closest analog to television in the Internet era, and video games are something you actively participate in. It might be possible to introduce categories of mostly-passive video games, where the player has some limited degree of interactivity but is mostly watching what’s going on, and where there aren’t hard real-time demands on their attention. Like, a game that you can viably play while simultaneously eating dinner or something.

Games are not losing attention. AAA publishers have been copy/pasting the same game for 2 decades.

Their greed made them risk averse which is just another way to say boring in an artistic medium.

Its not just “risk averse”, its easy money. Look at Forza 6. Or the dozen different sports games that get rehashed every year. They sell like crazy.

Pragmata isn’t the game competing with crypto, gambling, porn, and TikTok. That would be the likes of EA’s Not-FIFA, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny, NBA 2K; the kind of game that sells to people who don’t play many different video games.

But have you heard of live service games? Gamers will continually pay for a 10-hour game with mechanics designed to trap lonely people with compulsive addiction issues for 5000 per year. Imagine all the billions that we will make from those suckers gamers.

That is Microsoft’s ultimate problem, aside from how they started their current console cycle. They are too afraid to do something different, closing down studios that did something different and didn’t meet unhinged sales metrics. I think that their studios need to be allowed to cook and work on their specialty, in order to bring something awesome to the table.

Bringing awesome to the table is not compatible with Corporations who are legally obligated to be risk averse for the shareholders.

Yeah, awesome games often happen by accident, not on purpose in Corporate run scenarios…Especially when you don’t have heavy hitters that can often produce some real bangers in your ranks. Indie will always be the primary place where game innovation and breakout hits tend to happen.

I don’t want to play games that compare and compete to gambling, crypto and porn. Sounds like bad games to me. Good games don’t care about gambling and crypto.

Just look at Stellaris, Factorio or Rimworld players to know this is false. What modern games are clearly missing is genocide and crimes against humanity.

Been playing Stellaris since literal day one. Quality of new dlc had gone down, but there is definitely heart and soul put into it.

As a player of Stellaris, Stellaris players are crazy. They spend too much money on the games on DLC, that game has like more than $500 in DLC probably. Its insane.

I just play multiplayer with someone who… acquired… the DLC lol.

The Sims 4 is currently up to $1,596.89 with all DLC on Steam.

DCS is up to $4,368.28 with all DLC on Steam (though in fairness, I think that it’s very likely that almost all players are not getting all planes, but rather picking specific ones that they’re interested in playing, and a lot of that is different planes.)

What an odd statement. Xbox is in direct competition with porn and crypto? Do they know any of those things? Do they think people are just like “hm, 60 dollars. I could game, buy porn, or crypto. Hmmmmmm”

Anything to avoid looking inward. Their IPs have empty corporate souls because they’re made by souless corporate entities. Halo, Gears, Starfield, all shallow empty stories, and gamers are tired of it.

Of course they don’t have souls so they assume gamers don’t either. Couldn’t be that were gaming to enjoy a story or feel something deeply, no we’re literally debating on gambling or video games. Jesus Christ so out of touch.

let’s be real: it’s not a coincidence that sports gambling is an exploding market and sports games are shrinking. they are targeting the same people.

They just hired this guy, and he made those statements before that, so it’s not avoiding looking inward. Besides there very much is a customer they’re losing to these other things, and they’re the largest market segment in gaming. It’s just not your demographic.
