Cycling without a helmet is truly one of those things that have literally no point. Like legit why would anyone do that. Its a 2 kilo thing you strap to your head that just instantly reduces the chance for you to die(i dont know the statistics for this but its like actually a huge reduction)

As a member of Gen X, we didn’t wear helmets as kids (because the helmet usually cost more than the bike) and the habit stuck for a lot of people.

For me it’s a habit, 80s kid, I just don’t even think about it. I don’t ride very often either, only a couple times a year and usually on paths. But that doesn’t excuse it :(

I can honestly say I’ve owned plenty of bicycles, but zero bicycle helmets.

Motorcycles are a different story though; I always wear a full-face helmet.

'cause it’s hot and you have to carry it with you or store it somewhere

I just hook it onto my bike lock in a way that someone would have to cut the strap to get it off. Bike thieves are generally not the type to wear or care about helmets and someone who wants a helmet that bad either wouldn’t cut it or they can fucking have it.

While I wear a helmet almost every time I bike, I will never push someone to wear one if they’re not convinced. Not cycling is almost always worse than not having a helmet. Cars are more dangerous, so is being sedentary.

The Netherlands, kingdom of cycling has almost no helmet use because the streets are safe and well designed.

By that same metric it would make sense to wear a helmet while walking, in case you slip and fall. Or While driving.

People in Netherlands commonly ride heavy, non aerodynamic bikes that would make the long, fast, hilly commutes we do in my city a fucking nightmare and at that slow speed you could see why someone would think not wearing a helmet was a chill move. I’ve, of course seen someone get their foot stuck in a pedal strap at a full stop, fall over and crack their head on a sidewalk, so there is no situation I would consider safe without a helmet on a bike.
