Working rotating shifts and seeing and being both in just the space of a few weeks is a new level of misery.
I did shift work for years, and it has done permanent damage
I get up at 0430 for work now, and people ask how I cope with the early start, but it’s infinitely better than what I used to do!
Yeah fixed working hours are better, did a year of rotating between just 2 shifts and even that was better than rotating between 3 shits.
My circadian rhythm is a myth. Most people quit within few years due to some health related issues and those who have managed to handle it longer just become alcoholics to mask health issues.
I’m both…

Fuck night shifts. I worked nights for 11 months. 2 weeks off wasn’t enough time for me to readjust. There were a couple of weeks during winter where I didn’t see sunlight at all.
But there’s the issue. Don’t readjust, embrace it, become the nightwalker. Sunlight is overated and burns us anyway, hisss
That roller coaster is great though
Those of us who’ve been up for a few hours at 6 are a mix of both
I’m a morning person in the sense I like the quiet vibes of the morning. I’m just not a “wake up in the morning” person.
I used to work a graveyard shift from 11pm to 6am. The first wave of morning workers were typically tradies in hi-viz, driving bright white vans. I used to think of them as a glowing army sent to scare off the walking dead clubbers who were still stumbling around.
You cannot pass.
I am a servant of the Maintenance, wielder of the Hi-Viz Vest.
You cannot pass.
The drugs will not avail you, creature of The Night. Go back to the Shadow!
Youuu!..Shall Not!..Paaaaasss!- Gandalf, cleaner of Moria Club, holding The Broom and Mop.

They said tradie, if this is to be believed, the drugs have probably already availed them.
I work 2300-0700. What is this seven hour shift you speak of?!
I used to work a shift that was 7pm-7am Thursday and Friday, then 11pm-7am Saturday and Sunday. I miss night shift.
When I switched from that job to one that was (IIRC) 7am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, it was a challenging week.
edit: actually I think it was 6am to 4pm. I don’t exactly remember how the change went. I just remember developing a dependency on energy drinks and apologizing to my mentor for being sleepy.
It was more like 2230-0630 because of overlapping handover, but that’s when I was officially on duty.
18:45-07:15 for me :(
Does “graveyard shift” mean night shift or did you work in graveyard?
Someone has to make sure they stay down.
You actually work a shifter in the graveyard, shifting tombs n stuff /j
It means overnight shift, usually 10pm to 6am
huh, TIL a necromancer doesn’t necessarily fuck the undead but simply raises them from it.

Oh Jesus! Look here. You’re thinking of necroPHILIA. A necroPHILIAC. Don’t do honest necromancers like this! Some of us just out here trying to make a living in the dark arts son!
but you can’t have necromancy without a little romance 😏
Um no. In my experience, it’s those who get up early that scare the crap out of zombies.
This describes my interactions with my son during the summer.
Oh my lord, and grandma (my mom) comes by during the day and then I get an earful that the teenager sleeps all day it can’t be good for him.
Actually it’s convenient for me because at least his grumpy self is awake when I am home. He’s playing online all night with his tween nephews, his half sister has a new baby so technically he is free babysitting his nephews all night every night till 4am so she can sleep and worry about her newborn most of the day while they are crashed out.
I’m gonna start throttling the internet at 1am, then midnight, then 11 two weeks before school starts.
smart
I sent to a wedding and there were some college kids there who said they were going out after the ceremony if I wanted to come. It got later and I thought they’d changed plans but it rolled around to 10 and they said they were heading out. I went to bed. They woke up at 2 the next afternoon
I’m in my 40s now but boy oh boy when I was in my 20s->early 30s sunrise meant it was time to think about where I was going for the after-party
Same, but I’m the one going to bed at 5am lol
You might be my dad
Go to bed!
No chance 😝
I’ve started going in to work early so I’m getting up at 4:30 every morning now. Last week I was texting a friend who hadn’t gone to bed yet while I was getting ready for work. He works a typical 9-5 office job from home so he probably wakes up pretty late by my standards, even still he was probably pretty tired that day at work. But that’s his norm, it’s crazy to me.
I work an office job, but I tend to sleep 1 or 2 hours early in the evening and then stay up till 2 or 3 am. It’s not really healthy, but it does give me more time to enjoy the quiet of night.
Me on public transport going home from tha club, surrounded by people on their way to work… A very sobering experience…
lol my first professional job had me on the overnight bus network (lovingly called the Vomit Comet) at 5 am. It was typically full of people who were drunk or high but they were tired so there was no trouble. Everyone minded their own business and we lived in peace.
I wish I could have said the same for the pre-game crowd when I was coming home from jobs that ended 9 pm or later.
It makes you feel so wasted being around sober people. Or maybe it’s that being around other people who are wasted numbs you to it
I always felt that they are still wasted, just in another way. They’re recently awake, on the way to work that for the vast majority isn’t something they’re excited about. They’re drained and don’t want to be there. I always thought I’d much rather choose my position in those moments than theirs. And I’m sure at least some see us (in this situation) and are envious.
Here’s a question I thought of to ask people at parties: what is the time of night (or day I suppose) where you’re just as likely to be staying up late as to be getting up early? In other words, sort of the midpoint between your latest bedtimes and earliest mornings. I think mine would be around 5 AM.
If I had to guess for me it’s 7 or 8 am
2-3 am unfortunately
Bold of you to assume my latest bedtimes and earliest mornings don’t overlap :p
It was routinely lunchtime (if at all) back in my party days
5AM is spot on in my (foolish) experience when I was younger. I have many fun nights still barely going at 5AM and I also had jobs where I got up at 4:45AM to beat the traffic for a long commute.
IMO, it’s between 4:00 and 4:30am is the cutoff between days.
The Witching Hour
About 5 pm for me. My shift is 10 pm till 6 am 5 days a week. And I try to stick to a 1 pm till 8 pm sleep schedule. But it is always interesting seeing people at 4-5 am and trying to guess whether they are knocking off or starting work.
I never watched the Goosebumps TV show, was it any good?
Watch are you afraid of the dark instead
If I could stay up all night and sleep at day it would fix me
Have you considered remote work on the opposite side of the planet?
If they’re anything like me, it would be heaven at first, then they’d slowly adjust back to normal. It’s a circadian rhythm issue tied to sun levels
…no like live where you can match your circadian rhythm and work remotely in a place tha it lines up with. Most office/teaching jobs dont have a night shift.
Ah, yeah now that’s a big brain strategy there
Most countries offer english teaching positions and a lot of them can be done remotely. You dont need a degree in a lot of them too
My roommate works graveyard. I naturally wake up at 4am.
There’s been many weird catch-up conversations in the kitchen when our paths cross lol
Tis is how me and one of my housemates are. She games all night and i wake up for work at 5ish. So she is having dinner around when i am having breakfast lmao
Gotta get quality time in where we can, right? Haha that sounds lovely honestly :)
I am both…. (Depending on the day)
